Japan World Cup Warm-up: Ogawa's Late Header Seals 1-0 Win Over Iceland

Japan closed World Cup preparations with a 1-0 win over Iceland, decided by Koki Ogawa’s 87th‑minute header. The friendly at MUFG Stadium was cautious rather than open, yet the late breakthrough ensured Japan ended this international window with a positive result.

The match again highlighted Japan’s issues in front of goal. Japan attempted 15 shots and hit the target seven times, but Iceland goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson resisted until the closing minutes. Japan generated only 1.03 expected goals, underlining the limited quality of chances created.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Japan’s attacking numbers in qualifying remain strong. Takefusa Kubo produced 12 direct goal contributions, Junya Ito supplied 11, and Ayase Ueda added 10. However, that

trio could not unlock Iceland’s deep defensive block during this final warm-up fixture.

Manager Hajime Moriyasu will want more influence from the recognised forwards when World Cup fixtures begin in North America. Wing-back Keito Nakamura led Japan for shots with four attempts, which again showed how much attacking responsibility fell on players outside the central forward line.

Moriyasu changed the attack at half-time, replacing Ito and Ueda. Their substitute team-mate, Ogawa, delivered the decisive moment. Yukinari Sugawara swung in a dangerous cross from the right, and Ogawa stooped to glance a low header in off the right-hand post.

Japan’s win sends the squad to North America with some confidence, but also clear tasks. Japan have never advanced beyond the last 16 at a World Cup. To change that record, Japan will need greater attacking sharpness against Netherlands, Sweden and Tunisia in Group F.
