Napoli’s Champions League campaign remains in danger after a 1-1 draw against 10-player Copenhagen, a result that keeps both clubs level on points and leaves the Serie A side facing a crucial meeting with
Chelsea while pressure also grows from Ajax in the same group.
The match swung Napoli’s way late in the first half when captain Thomas Delaney received a red card, upgraded by VAR for a high challenge on Stanislav Lobotka, and Scott McTominay soon took advantage by heading in Eljif Elmas’ corner, yet Copenhagen still fought back to claim a point.
McTominay’s opener arrived seven minutes before the break, the midfielder rising to meet a left-sided corner and steering a powerful header into the top-right corner, but that lead did not prove enough as Napoli failed to impose control despite the extra player during the second half.
The equaliser came after 69 minutes when Alessandro Buongiorno brought down Mohamed Elyounoussi in the area, gifting Copenhagen a penalty; Jordan Larsson’s initial effort was weak and saved by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, yet the forward reacted first to convert the rebound and frustrate the home support.
Napoli stay 23rd in the overall standings, sitting alongside Copenhagen, who occupy 24th; a decisive clash with Chelsea now follows next week, while substitute Lorenzo Lucca will reflect on a major late opportunity that went begging as a close-range chance to seal victory was sent off target.
Elsewhere in the group, Ajax increased the pressure by defeating Villarreal 2-1, with Oliver Edvardsen striking an 89th-minute winner; despite losing the first five matches in this season’s competition, the Eredivisie club can still reach the play-offs, with Olympiacos scheduled to travel to Amsterdam for the final fixture.
That result transformed Ajax’s statistical prospects of qualification, reflected in Opta’s prediction model.
11.5% - After tonight's results, Ajax still have an 11.5 percent chance to reach the UEFA Champions League Play-offs according to the Opta Predictor, compared to a chance of 2.4 percent before their 1-2 win away at Villarreal. Champions League data: Napoli scorers and Copenhagen with 10 players
McTominay has now scored four Champions League goals for Napoli this season, a strong return but still short of the club’s best single-campaign totals in the competition by Dries Mertens, Edinson Cavani and Victor Osimhen, whose tallies set the benchmark for modern attacking output at the club.
| Player | Season | Champions League goals |
|---|---|---|
| Dries Mertens | 2019-20 | 6 |
| Dries Mertens | 2016-17 | 5 |
| Edinson Cavani | 2011-12 | 5 |
| Victor Osimhen | 2022-23 | 5 |
| Scott McTominay | 2025-26 | 4 |
Copenhagen’s resilience with 10 players also stood out, as this draw means the Danish side have avoided defeat in four of five Champions League games where a player was dismissed, recording one win, three draws and one loss, with their only such defeat coming 3-0 against Sevilla in October 2022.
The combined results leave Napoli’s qualification hopes delicately balanced, with Copenhagen proving difficult opponents despite numerical setbacks and Ajax suddenly revived in the race, so the upcoming fixtures against Chelsea and Olympiacos will play a major part in deciding which clubs advance to the Champions League play-offs.
