Karanveer Singh is entering the Asian Games 2026 with renewed confidence, a career-best throw behind him and a clear target in front of him.
The Indian shot putter has enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 season, producing three of the five longest throws of his career and breaking the 20m barrier twice in major competitions.
His biggest moment came at the Inter State Athletics Championships 2026 in Bhubaneswar, where his final attempt travelled 20.49m, a new personal best and a major statement ahead of the Asian Games.
The effort was not just another mark on the scoreboard. For Karanveer, it was also confirmation that the hard work he had been putting in during training was finally translating into competition.
"My 20.49m attempt was a real relief for me
because, since the beginning of this year, I had been consistently reaching 20m-plus distances in training. Then, I started producing 20m-plus attempts in competitions as well, and that helped me clear a few doubts and understand what I needed to improve," Karanveer told myKhel.
His 20.49m effort comfortably surpassed the Asian Games qualification standard of 19.41m and became the third 20m-plus distance of his career across three different competitions.
The Punjab athlete followed that performance by once again crossing the 20m mark at the World Continental Silver Meet in Bhubaneswar, where he registered 20.06m.
His five biggest puts currently stand at 20.49m at the Inter State Championships in 2026, 20.10m at the Open Nationals in 2022, 20.06m at the World Continental Silver Meet in 2026, 20.00m at the Indian Grand Prix in 2021 and 19.73m at the Indian Athletics Series in 2026.
The 29-year-old began his 2026 campaign with a 19.36m effort at the Indian Open Throws, finishing second. He then claimed bronze at the Federation Cup with a best put of 19.38m.
The big breakthrough arrived in Bhubaneswar. With the pressure of his final attempt, Karanveer produced the best put of his career 20.49m. It was a significant jump from his previous competitive performances and gave him the belief that he could consistently operate at the 20m-plus level.
"Competing at the Indian Athletics Series Final helped me understand the areas I need to work on ahead of the Asian Games," he said. That process of identifying weaknesses and improving them could prove crucial when he steps onto the 2026 Asian Games stage in Aichi-Nagoya.
Karanveer's journey has not been without difficult moments.
In 2023, he tested positive in a doping test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency and was subsequently dropped from India's squad for the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. The exact circumstances surrounding the sample collection were not publicly clear at the time.
Before that setback, Karanveer had established himself as India's No.2 shot putter behind Tajinderpal Singh Toor. At the 2023 Inter State Championships in Bhubaneswar, he won silver with a season-best 19.78m, finishing behind Toor, who produced an Asian record of 21.77m.
Karanveer's return to competition came at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025 in Sangrur, where he finished fourth with 18.19m. Since then, his progression has been steady. The 20.49m throw in 2026 represents not just a personal best, but another significant step in rebuilding his career and establishing himself among India's leading shot putters.
One of the most interesting aspects of Karanveer's Asian Games campaign will be his competition with his more experienced compatriot Tajinderpal Singh Toor.
Toor remains India's leading shot putter and has set the benchmark for the discipline in the country for several years. But Karanveer is no longer simply looking to compete alongside him, he wants to push him. Karanveer revealed that Toor has also played a role in helping him look ahead rather than remain focused on his difficult past.
"Toor Paaji told me that I need to focus on the future and not think about what has happened in the past. He knew my potential and has helped me a lot," Karanveer said.
That advice has clearly stayed with him. "I want both of us to compete for gold at the Asian Games as well. I will definitely try to challenge Toor Paaji there," he added.
The statement captures Karanveer's mindset heading into the biggest international assignment of his career. Karanveer currently has another milestone firmly in his sights.
After finally translating his training form into competition performances, he believes a 21m throw is within reach. "As for the 21m throw, I believe it can come at any time," he said.
That confidence comes from a season in which he has repeatedly moved beyond the 20m mark. His 20.49m personal best has also established him among Asia's leading throwers in 2026.
The Asian Games will, however, present a different challenge. It will be Karanveer's third international competition, but his first appearance at a major international championship of this magnitude.
For a thrower who has experienced setbacks, made his way back into competition and finally discovered the consistency to cross 20m again, the Asian Games represent another opportunity to turn progress into a major result.
