The grandest stage in T20 cricket is beautifully set at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), square off against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the highly anticipated Grand Final of the IPL 2026 season.
In the all-important match where scoreboard pressure plays a massive psychological role, RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss. Trusting his team's explosive batting depth and recent record-shattering playoff totals, the skipper elected to bowl first.
Faced with the task to bat first on their home turf, the Gujarat Titans got off to a disastrous start. The RCB bowling unit came out firing on all cylinders, immediately putting themselves on top of the GT batters. In a massive double-blow
to the Titans' championship aspirations, Bengaluru's opening bowlers dismantled the host's top order almost immediately, dismissing the dangerous captain Shubman Gill scoring 10 and the highly fluent Sai Sudharsan on 12 runs fell cheaply inside the powerplay.
The twin breakthroughs completely silenced the Ahmedabad crowd and put the chasing side squarely on the back foot.
The initial damage was masterfully inflicted by the veteran opening pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood. Turning back the clock with impeccable seam positioning and elite discipline, Bhuvneshwar swung the new ball beautifully to trouble the batters, while Hazlewood extracted steep bounce and hit a relentless Test-match length. Their opening spells completely choked the flow of boundaries, creating immense pressure.
As the game transitioned into the middle overs, Krunal Pandya picked up right where the pacers left off. Operating with clinical precision, Krunal pinned the middle-order batters down, drying up the singles and putting an absolute iron grip on the GT batting lineup. By the 10th over, the Titans found themselves thoroughly suffocated by Bengaluru's relentless tactical execution. Now they are 116/6 by the end of the 16th over.
Dinesh Karthik on RCB's 'Attacking Champions' Philosophy
Speaking to the on-air commentators during the 10th over of the match, RCB batting coach and mentor Dinesh Karthik shed light on the exact mindset, "I think so because we set a mindset of trying to be attacking champions," Karthik explained. "We wanted to keep pushing towards a second title. One thing that we refrained from using was language around defending our title. Instead, we spoke about trying to win a second title. That's what we've constantly spoken about, and I think that's made a big difference. "
With Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar, and Krunal maintaining a vice-like grip over the Gujarat Titans, RCB stand firmly on the verge of securing back-to-back championships and cementing a historic modern IPL dynasty.
