Scotland has secured a spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1998, following a thrilling 4-2 win against Denmark at Hampden Park. This victory was marked by late goals from substitutes Kieran
Tierney and Kenny McLean, who both scored stunning long-range shots during stoppage time. The match was crucial as only a win would ensure Scotland topped Group C.
Denmark dominated the first half with ten attempts compared to Scotland's single effort. However, Scott McTominay's impressive overhead kick gave Scotland an early lead. The pressure from Denmark eventually paid off when Rasmus Hojlund scored a penalty after Andy Robertson fouled Gustav Isaksen, confirmed by VAR.
Rasmus Kristensen's second yellow card provided Scotland with an advantage, but it wasn't until the 78th minute that Lawrence Shankland put them back in front by converting Lewis Ferguson's corner. Yet, Denmark quickly equalised through Patrick Dorgu's side-footed goal just three minutes later.
The game took another dramatic turn in stoppage time. Tierney delivered a remarkable first-time shot from the edge of the box, beating Kasper Schmeichel. Moments later, McLean capitalised on this momentum with a strike from halfway, catching Denmark's goalkeeper off guard and sending Scottish fans into jubilation.
This triumph marks Scotland's return to the World Cup after a long absence of 28 years. Notably, both decisive goals were scored from outside the penalty area—a feat not achieved since June 2017. Tierney’s goal was his second for Scotland, his first being in March 2022.
Although McTominay’s initial goal did not determine the outcome, it set an energetic tone for the match. The Napoli star is notable for being Scotland’s only player with double figures in both goals (13) and goal involvements (15) since early 2023. He has also scored consecutively at home since June of this year.
This victory not only ends Scotland’s long wait but also highlights their capability to perform under pressure on such significant occasions.
