India's women's hockey team produced a determined comeback to level their four-match series against Argentina, winning the final two matches after losing the opening games. The tour, played in Buenos Aires from April 13 to 17, ended 2-2, showcasing India's resilience against one of the world's strongest teams.
After falling behind early in the series, India regrouped strongly to claim back-to-back wins, including a shootout victory in the final match, to ensure the contest finished level.
India recover after challenging start to series
India began the tour with an energetic performance in the opening match on April 13. Navneet Kaur opened the scoring for India in the 22nd minute, followed by Annu doubling the lead in the 29th minute. However, Argentina mounted a strong comeback to secure a 4-2
victory.
Maria Emilia Larsen struck in the 11th minute for Argentina before Victoria Granato equalised in the 18th minute. Julieta Jankunas then scored twice, in the 42nd and 55th minutes, to seal the win for the hosts despite India's promising attacking display.
The second match, played on April 14, followed a similar pattern. Ishika gave India an early advantage in the 22nd minute, but Argentina responded through Agustina Gorzelany, who scored twice in the 34th and 48th minutes to hand the hosts a 2-1 victory and a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
Despite the defeats, India showed encouraging attacking intent and maintained defensive discipline, setting the stage for a strong response in the remaining matches.
Penalty corner efficiency drives India's comeback
India found momentum in the third match on April 16, delivering a composed and disciplined performance to stay alive in the series.
Navneet Kaur scored in the 26th minute through a well-executed penalty corner, before Neha added another penalty corner conversion in the 37th minute to give India a 2-0 lead.
Argentina responded late through Agustina Gorzelany in the 52nd minute, but India's defence held firm in the closing stages to secure a crucial 2-1 victory.
The win shifted momentum in India's favour and ensured the series would be decided in the final match.
Shootout victory seals dramatic finish
The fourth and final match on April 17 proved to be a tense and tightly contested encounter. Both teams created scoring opportunities, but disciplined defending from both sides resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at the end of regulation time.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match moved to a shootout. India held their composure under pressure, converting key chances to secure a 3-2 win and level the series at 2-2.
The clean sheet in regulation time reflected India's improved defensive organisation, while the shootout victory demonstrated the team's mental strength in high-pressure situations.
Valuable experience against world-class opposition
Facing Argentina on away soil offered India valuable match exposure against one of the top teams in international women's hockey. The series tested India's adaptability, particularly after early setbacks, and highlighted the squad's ability to recover under pressure.
The back-to-back victories in the final two matches underline India's progress in maintaining composure and executing structured game plans against elite opponents.
Navneet Kaur praises team's resilience
Stand-in captain Navneet Kaur credited the team's fighting spirit and collective belief as key factors behind the comeback.
"I am incredibly proud of how the team responded after the first two matches. It isn't easy to trail 0-2 against a world-class team like Argentina, but we showed the heart and character needed to fight back," she said.
"These back-to-back wins prove that we are moving in the right direction and can handle pressure on the big stage. "
Focus shifts to preparation and future tournaments
Following the conclusion of the Argentina tour, the Indian Women's Hockey Team will return home to resume training camps. The experience gained during this series is expected to play a crucial role in preparing the squad for upcoming international competitions.
The comeback against Argentina not only restored parity in the series but also reinforced India's ability to compete against top-tier opposition - a positive sign as the team continues to build momentum on the global stage.
