Thai striking veteran Kongthoranee Sor Sommai talks about his upcoming fight, opponent, and what's at stake when he faces in-form and dangerous Asadula Imangazaliev in a flyweight Muay Thai clash in the
co-main event of ONE Fight Night 39 on 24 January.
The 29-year-old brings an 11-4 ONE record into this crucial matchup. Kongthoranee won eight out of nine bouts since his promotional debut in 2023, establishing himself as a legitimate flyweight contender.
However, the Thai veteran has lost two consecutive fights against legendary Nong-O Hama and undefeated Aslamjon Ortikov. The back-to-back defeats have put Kongthoranee's momentum on hold and positioned him as the underdog against his surging opponent.
Kongthoranee has studied Imangazaliev extensively and acknowledges the Russian's dangerous skillset. The Thai veteran recognizes his opponent's speed as the primary weapon but also respects the completeness of Imangazaliev's striking arsenal across all weapons.
"His strength is definitely his speed. He's a complete fighter with dangerous punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. It's true his record is impressive, but I've lost two in a row now. I want this win badly, and I will do my absolute best," Kongthoranee said.
He accepts his underdog status heading into this co-main event. Kongthoranee understands why pundits favor the young undefeated Russian with momentum, but he views this as his opportunity to prove his best form remains within reach.
"I'm being viewed as the underdog for this fight, which is fair. I've lost two straight while he's a rising star. But this fight is my chance to prove that I still have the fire and that I can reclaim my best form," Kongthoranee said.
The Thai striker's motivation comes from refusing to serve as a stepping stone for Imangazaliev's continued rise. Kongthoranee plans to give everything he has to prevent the Russian from using him as another highlight-reel victim on the path to championship contention.
"I refuse to be a stepping stone for him. I'm giving this everything I've got. I don't know who will win or lose, but I'm coming to fight 100 percent. I am determined to redeem myself," Kongthoranee said.
