Federico Chiesa has admitted that a transfer away from Liverpool during the upcoming window is possible, as the forward looks for steadier playing time after a difficult season and prepares to discuss future plans with new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The 28-year-old moved from Juventus to Anfield in August 2024 and has since featured only 50 times in all competitions, with injuries and selection choices limiting minutes despite being part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League last season.
Chiesa’s struggle for action has centred on the 2025-26 campaign under former manager Arne Slot, when Chiesa made 36 appearances but started just five matches and totalled 726 minutes, a situation that has prompted reflection on whether consistent
football can realistically arrive at Liverpool.
"I want to play, and if I don't find continuity in the Premier League, I'll need to find it elsewhere," Chiesa told Gazzetta dello Sport, as quoted by The Athletic. "This season just gone, I got next to no minutes. I'll go to the U.S. for pre-season, then I'll talk to the club and Iraola, and we'll see. I've honestly not played a lot since the start of 2026. I've got a great relationship with Liverpool. Back in January, the club and Slot said I couldn't leave. They needed me. It was about numbers. We were in crisis. I understood the situation and stayed, keeping a smile on my face. We're still talking about Liverpool. Last year they allowed me to win the Premier League. "
Interest from Serie A has grown, with reports in Italy linking Chiesa with a potential return after leaving Juventus, yet Chiesa has stated that no league is being ruled out as long as any move offers a realistic chance to feature regularly.
| Club | Competition | Appearances | Honours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juventus | All competitions | 131 | Coppa Italia (2), Supercoppa Italiana |
| Liverpool | All competitions | 50 | Premier League |
Before arriving on Merseyside, Chiesa built a strong record at Juventus, first joining on loan from Fiorentina and then signing permanently before the 2022-23 season, winning two Coppa Italia titles and the Supercoppa Italiana while becoming a regular figure across four campaigns.
Asked directly about heading back to Serie A, Chiesa stressed that personal status matters less than involvement, saying: "The important thing for me is game time. I am not presumptuous enough to say: I have to be a starter. I am ready to fight for my place anywhere. "
With pre-season in the United States approaching and Iraola newly installed after Slot’s departure at the end of the campaign, Liverpool and Chiesa are set for decisive talks that will determine whether the forward stays to compete for minutes in the Premier League or seeks a different role elsewhere.
