Pep Guardiola is being linked with the vacant Italy national team job, but Fabio Capello believes Guardiola would have to adjust his methods to succeed at international level. Capello thinks the current Manchester City manager would face new challenges with Italy after working only in daily club environments so far in his coaching career.
Capello stressed that managing a national side is unlike running a club, highlighting how limited training time and player availability change the role. The former England and Russia coach suggested that Guardiola’s success with Manchester City does not automatically guarantee similar results with Italy, especially under the unique pressure of international football.
Capello praised Guardiola’s record but underlined
the difference in responsibilities. "He's a great coach with great quality. He's always done well at a club level," Capello told Gazzetta, as quoted by Football Italia. Capello then stated that the switch from club coach to national selector would demand a different mindset.
Capello explained the main contrast between Manchester City and an Italy role. "The national team [coach] is a different job; you don'twork with the team every day, and that'swhere the difficulty lies. You are not a coach, you are a selector. Therefore, you must be good at finding the right players who can truly play for the national team the same way they do at their clubs. " Capello said this remains a key challenge for anyone taking charge of Italy.
Capello pointed to the mental burden of wearing the Azzurri shirt. "This is exactly the problem. Many players, when they put on the Italy shirt, tighten up. " Capello added that club conditions also differ from those at national level. "We are talking about a great coach, but if he needs two midfielders, they'll buy them for him; he'saccustomed to this. Here, you don'tfind them; that'sthe difference. The team has to improve in a different way. "
Capello still backed Guardiola’s ability to adapt if the Italy national team appointment happens. "He's a great coach, as his results and everything he's achieved show. He's a smart person, too. He might understand how to do it right away. " Capello’s assessment suggests Guardiola’s intelligence and track record with Manchester City could help overcome the new conditions with a national side.

Speculation around Guardiola’s future at Manchester City has grown, with reports suggesting Guardiola is expected to leave at the end of the season. City missed out on the Premier League title to Arsenal after drawing with Bournemouth on Tuesday, and they finish their league campaign on Sunday against Aston Villa.
Guardiola has managed Manchester City since 2016, collecting 20 trophies across all competitions. This season marks the first time in his managerial career that Guardiola has not secured a league title in back-to-back campaigns. The end of that record has fuelled talk that Guardiola might seek a new challenge, with the Italy national team job among the possibilities.
| Club | Period | Trophies with Manchester City | Consecutive league titles streak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester City | 2016–2026 | 20 | Ends with failure to win league in consecutive seasons |
The Italy national team post became vacant after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup, which led to Gennaro Gattuso resigning. Any appointment of Guardiola would therefore come at a time of rebuilding for Italy, with pressure to improve performances in major tournaments while working under the stricter limits of international football.
