Matheesha Pathirana Fitness Update: KKR Pacer Ruled Out Of IPL 2026 After Failing To Achieve Match-Fitness

IPL 2026: Kolkata Knight Riders have already encountered a string of challenges in the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League, and their woes continue to mount. The team has yet again suffered an injury blow. This time, it is the Sri Lankan Matheesha Pathirana who has been ruled out of the tournament after failing to achieve match fitness.

The development comes a day before KKR's second match, where they take on Sunrisers. With the absence of Pathirana, the already weak pace attack of KKR looks more fragile going ahead in the season.

Kolkata Knight Riders had been holding onto hope that Matheesha Pathirana could still link up with the squad midway through the season, provided he cleared his fitness assessment. That possibility had generated

optimism within the camp, as his return would have significantly bolstered a bowling unit already short on options.

How Will Matheesha Pathirana's Absence Impact KKR?

The setback further compounds an already difficult situation for KKR's bowling department. Even before the start of the Indian Premier League 2026, the team had lost key pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep due to injuries and other issues. To add to their woes, the franchise also parted ways with experienced Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman amid political unrest back home, a decision taken in coordination with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which had broader implications beyond the league.

In response, KKR brought in Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur, while Navdeep Saini was drafted in to cover for Harshit Rana. However, no direct replacement has been announced for Akash Deep, and with Pathirana now ruled out as well, the team finds itself in urgent need of reinforcements to stabilize its pace attack.
