Christian Eriksen says comments from Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim hurt the squad last season. Amorim had publicly branded that team the worst in the club’s history. Eriksen feels those remarks
increased pressure on players who were already struggling and still trying to perform.
The criticism came in January, straight after United lost 3-1 at home to Brighton. Amorim’s side eventually finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest place since 1989-90. They collected only 42 points, their smallest total since relegation in 1973-74, and also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Eriksen played under Ruben Amorim for the last six months of a three-year spell at Manchester United. The midfielder believes the public nature of those remarks affected performances in the remaining fixtures. Eriksen told The Sunday Times: "That didn't help," before expanding on how the squad reacted to Amorim’s assessment.
"That didn't help, Eriksen told The Sunday Times. Yeah, that didn't help at all. I don't think that helped the players at all. Some stuff you can say inside and it's not too clever to say outside, to put extra pressure and put an extra label on the players who were already trying to do their best. Then if he's right or wrong, whatever, but I think for us it was a bit of like, 'Oh, here we go again. Another headline. '"

Christian Eriksen arrived at Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Across three seasons, Eriksen helped the club lift both the EFL Cup and the FA Cup. The Denmark international scored eight goals in 107 appearances before leaving for Wolfsburg when the contract ended last season.
Manchester United are performing better under Ruben Amorim this campaign despite last season’s problems. Amorim’s current side sit sixth in the Premier League table. They are only three points behind fourth-place Liverpool, keeping Manchester United in contention for a return to the Champions League places.
