Australia's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign got off to a dream start against Turkiye, and at the heart of it was one of the most remarkable stories in world football.
Nestory Irankunda etched his name into Socceroos history by becoming the youngest Australian player ever to score at a FIFA World Cup, finding the net in Australia's Group D clash against Turkiye in Vancouver.
The 20-year-old forward produced a moment of brilliance in the 27th minute, racing onto a long pass from Paul Okon-Engstler before bursting through the Turkish defence and calmly finishing into the bottom corner. The goal showcased the explosive pace and composure that have made him one of Australia's brightest young talents.
Who Is Nestory Irankunda?
Irankunda's journey to the World Cup is unlike most
football stories.
Born in a refugee camp in Tanzania to Burundian parents, Irankunda moved to Australia when he was just three months old. His family eventually settled in Perth, where his football journey began before he emerged as one of the country's most exciting prospects.
The forward first caught national attention during his time with Adelaide United, where his electrifying pace, powerful shooting and fearless attacking style quickly made him a fan favourite.
During his spell with Adelaide United, Irankunda scored 16 goals and registered eight assists in 61 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most promising young players in Australian football.
European Adventure
His rapid rise earned him a dream move to German giants Bayern Munich ahead of the 2024-25 season.
While opportunities at Bayern's first team proved limited, Irankunda continued his development through a loan spell with Swiss side Grasshoppers before eventually joining English Championship club Watford.
At Watford, the Australian international enjoyed a productive campaign, recording four goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions while adapting to the demands of European football.
Reflecting on his development earlier this year, Irankunda admitted the move abroad had taught him valuable lessons.
"I expected to do a lot better than I'd done this season, but in terms of what I got out of it, it was learning how the league works," he said. "You have to eat well, sleep well, recover well and have consistency in your performances. "
Making History On The Biggest Stage
Against Turkiye, Irankunda was already making history before kick-off, becoming the youngest Socceroos player to start a FIFA Men's World Cup match.
His goal took that achievement one step further.
The strike made him the youngest Australian ever to score at a World Cup and further strengthened his reputation as the future face of Australian football.
The celebration was as memorable as the goal itself, with the young forward delivering an ice-cool response after giving Australia the lead in one of the tournament's early surprises.
The Coach Who Saw His Potential
Long before Bayern Munich, Watford and the World Cup spotlight, Adelaide United coach Airton Andrioli recognised Irankunda's extraordinary potential.
"Gold is something that's out there," Andrioli said of the youngster. "I was trying to be that person that could remove a little bit of the dirt and some rocks around so he could shine. "
That faith has been repaid in spectacular fashion.
From a refugee camp in Tanzania to the world's biggest sporting stage, Irankunda's journey has become one of the standout stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026. And at just 20 years old, many believe his best moments are still to come.
