The New Orleans Pelicans faced a tough challenge against the Denver Nuggets, losing 125-118 at Smoothie King Center. Despite this being their seventh consecutive defeat, the return of Zion Williamson was
a significant positive for the team. Williamson had been sidelined due to a Grade 1 left hamstring strain but made a notable comeback with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Interim coach James Borrego expressed his delight at having Williamson back on the court. "It was great," he said. "He got us off to a really good start. His energy, just having Zion out there for our spirit as a team, as a city, as an organisation, is phenomenal. We feel like we got a shot every night when he is on the floor. "
Borrego highlighted how Williamson's presence boosts the team's morale and performance. The game plan was centred around him, and his ability to create opportunities was evident. "He looked good, he looked impressive," Borrego noted. "The game plan was built around him, and he was a willing passer. He gave it up. "
Williamson's return also benefited rookie center Derik Queen, who achieved a career-high 30 points during the game. Queen acknowledged Williamson's influence on his performance: "Even though I was the leading scorer of the game [for the Pelicans], Z's presence out there is huge," Queen stated.
Despite Williamson's impactful return, Denver's Nikola Jokic and Peyton Watson were instrumental in their victory. Jokic scored 28 points while Watson led with 32 points, showcasing their offensive prowess against New Orleans.
The Pelicans fought hard throughout the match but couldn't overcome Denver's strong performance. Borrego praised his team's effort: "I think we started the game with that mentality, and we fought to the end. "
Williamson’s comeback has rejuvenated hopes for New Orleans despite their recent struggles. His ability to generate quality shots and energise his teammates is crucial as they aim to break their losing streak.
