Under Article 2.22 of the ICC's Code of Conduct, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over a team falls short, capped at 50% - a ceiling Pakistan hit outright given the scale of the shortfall. Separately, under WTC playing conditions, teams lose one championship point per over short, meaning the same 11-over deficit
cost them 11 points directly off their table position.
The sanctions were levied by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar, and fourth umpire Russell Warren, with ICC Elite Panel match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposing the final penalty.
Where This Leaves Pakistan in the Standings
The deduction pushes Pakistan's points percentage down to 4.63, leaving them rooted at ninth - bottom of the WTC table - with just two wins and seven defeats from nine Tests in the current cycle. It's a difficult number to look past: a points penalty layered directly onto a results problem that was already the worst in the competition.
The over-rate fine was really just the final indignity in a tour that had been falling apart for weeks. Pakistan lost the series opener at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs, then dropped the second Test at Lord's by 194 runs to go 0-2 down. What followed was a genuine institutional shakeup: the Pakistan Cricket Board released seven players from the squad - Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad - while removing head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul from their roles, all before the third Test had even been played.

White-ball coach Mike Hesson was handed charge of the Test side for the Edgbaston finale, joined by Ashley Noffke, with seven replacement players called up - five of them uncapped. Hesson later clarified that the decision to send the released players home had actually been made before he was even given control of the Test team, distancing the incoming coaching staff from a call made in the chaos before their arrival. None of the reshuffling changed the outcome: England completed an eight-wicket win at Edgbaston to seal the 3-0 sweep, and Pakistan finished the tour with a points penalty attached to the scoreline as a final indignity.

Pakistan's next WTC assignment comes in November, when they host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series split between Rawalpindi and Lahore. After a tour that cost them wins, personnel, coaching staff, and now ranking points in the same stretch, that home series arrives as less of a fixture and more of a genuine reset opportunity - one Pakistan badly need after finishing bottom of the table with the scoreline still fresh.
