Smaran Ravichandran, the explosive left-handed batter from Karnataka, is finally set to make his much-awaited Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) debut in the IPL 2026 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday (May 3).
SRH captain Pat Cummins won the Toss and elected to bat first, confirming Smaran's inclusion in the side.
Who is Smaran Ravichandran?
Smaran Ravichandran (also known as Ravichandran Smaran or R Smaran) is a 22-year-old left-handed batting all-rounder who bowls right-arm off-breaks. He was born on May 5, 2003 in Mysore.
He plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket and is contracted with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL. In just two senior seasons, he has established himself as one of India's most exciting young domestic talents, known for his high-intent stroke
play, ability to score big in red-ball cricket, and composure under pressure.
Early Life and Coach's Influence
Smaran grew up in Bengaluru as a hyperactive seven-year-old who tried to impress everyone around him. His coach Syed Zabiulla played a transformative role. Smaran initially shone as an off-spinner, taking 31 wickets in U-14 two-day matches. Zabiulla shifted focus to batting and used innovative training: in a single two-day match, Smaran had to bat the first 50 overs like a Test, the next 30 like ODIs, and the last 10 like T20s. He also enforced strict discipline-e.g., no big shots until he scored a set number of singles-to build temperament and a team-first mindset.
He has been in Karnataka's system since U-14, captained the U-16 side and dominated junior tournaments. In 2018-19, aged 15, he racked up 617 runs in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (U-16). He later scored 829 runs in the CK Nayudu Trophy (U-23), helping Karnataka win their maiden title. Before senior debut, he dominated Bengaluru's KSCA Division I league with 647 runs (2022-23) and a staggering 768 runs at a record average in 2023-24 season.
He completed a Bachelor's in Business Administration and is pursuing a Master's in Finance.
Domestic Breakthrough and Standout Performances
Smaran made his senior debut for Karnataka in the 2024-25 season. His numbers are exceptional for someone so young:
First-class: 17 matches, 1,534 runs at 73.04 average, including three double-centuries (highest 227).
List A: 18 matches, 604 runs at 50.33, with a match-winning 101 in the 2025 Vijay Hazare Trophy final
T20s: 13 matches, 489 runs at 48.90 average and 162.45 strike rate.
He scored a commanding 203 against Shubman Gill's Punjab in the Ranji Trophy and an unbeaten 133 against Haryana. He carried his form into the 2025-26 season, smashing an unbeaten 220 against Kerala and a monumental 227 against Chandigarh. A major confidence booster came in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he unleashed six sixes in a blistering 21-ball 49 against Gujarat - including one off Axar Patel - that transformed his approach to the game.
IPL Journey
SRH signed him mid-IPL 2025 as a ₹30 lakh replacement for Adam Zampa, but an injury prevented his debut. The franchise retained him for IPL 2026, where he has been part of the squad.
