Chelsea's manager, Enzo Maresca, explained the decision to rest Cole Palmer for the Champions League match against Atalanta. Palmer recently returned to action in a Premier League game against Bournemouth, marking his first appearance since mid-September. During that match, he played 58 minutes, took one shot on target, and created a chance for his teammates. Only Enzo Fernandez surpassed him in passes made in the final third.
Maresca emphasised the importance of managing Palmer's playing time to ensure his full recovery. "Cole, it's part of his process at the moment," Maresca stated regarding Palmer's absence from the travelling squad. He added that Palmer is not yet ready to play two games within three days, and this decision is part of a plan
to protect him.
Liam Delap will also miss Tuesday's game due to a shoulder injury sustained during the Bournemouth match. Maresca expressed uncertainty about Delap's recovery timeline but noted it was fortunate there was no fracture. "Liam is an important player for us because we know that he needs to play games to get fit and better," Maresca said.
Chelsea are currently navigating a series of away fixtures. They faced a 3-1 defeat against Leeds United at Elland Road before drawing 0-0 with Bournemouth. This upcoming match against Atalanta marks Chelsea's 100th away game in the European Cup/Champions League. The Blues have won 41 out of their previous 99 matches, making them the English team with the most victories in their first 100 games.

Despite their historical success, Chelsea have struggled recently in away Champions League matches, failing to win any of their last four (one draw and three losses). Their last similar streak occurred in February 2012 when they went five consecutive away games without a victory.
Maresca discussed the challenges of frequent travel and tight schedules: "In terms of playing away, we were more points away than at home in the Premier League. " He acknowledged that while adapting to constant travel is difficult, they are working hard to adjust.
The upcoming clash between Atalanta and Chelsea will be their first meeting in European competition. Both teams currently have ten points in the Champions League standings; however, Maresca’s side sits higher due to goal difference.
