Newcastle United moved closer to securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League league phase with a 3-0 home victory over PSV, as Yoane Wissa delivered a goal and an assist, while Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes also scored to leave Eddie Howe's side seventh on 13 points before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Wissa, making a first Champions League home start for Newcastle, played a central role in the result, while Gordon continued a strong European campaign with another decisive strike, helping the Magpies maintain control of their qualification hopes against the Eredivisie leaders.
The match swung Newcastle’s way inside eight minutes when PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar hit a poor clearance straight to Bruno Guimaraes, whose pass released Joelinton,
and the forward set up Wissa to finish, with the forward’s scuffed effort still rolling beyond Kovar and settling the hosts into a commanding rhythm.
Defensive errors again punished PSV on 30 minutes, as Yarek Gasiorowski underhit a back pass, allowing Wissa to pounce, drive into space and square for Gordon, who calmly converted, though Newcastle’s strong first half brought a setback when Guimaraes later left the pitch after a collision with Kovar.
Newcastle’s control continued after the interval and the result was effectively secured on 65 minutes when Harvey Barnes collected possession around 30 yards from goal, weaved through space on a solo run and drove a precise low shot into the bottom-right corner, leaving PSV with too much to do.
| Team | Goals | Shots | xG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newcastle United | 3 | 11 | 2.52 |
| PSV | 0 | 6 | 0.34 |
Wissa almost added a second late on but could not quite reach Barnes’ inviting cross, yet Newcastle rarely looked troubled as they saw out the closing stages, restricting PSV to limited chances, reflected in the visitors’ expected goals total of 0.34 from six attempts compared with Newcastle’s 2.52 from 11 shots.

Gordon’s goal took the winger to six in the Champions League this season, a tally bettered only by Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe with 11 and Harry Kane with seven in major European competition, while the strike also meant Gordon matched Alan Shearer’s goal record in UEFA’s main club tournament for Newcastle.
For Wissa, the night carried historical significance, as the forward became the seventh Newcastle player to score on a first Champions League home start and the 11th player from DR Congo to net in the competition, with only two doing so for English clubs, both for Newcastle, thanks to Wissa and Lomana Lua Lua, underscoring the wider impact of this 3-0 success.
