Liverpool coach Arne Slot admits the draw with Burnley leaves both team and supporters annoyed. Parts of the Anfield crowd appeared to jeer after the 1-1 result, and Slot accepts that reaction. Liverpool had been leading yet dropped points again at home in the Premier League.
The stalemate continues a difficult pattern against promoted clubs for Liverpool during the 2025-26 league campaign. The reigning champions have now drawn at Anfield with Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds, failing to win any of those three home Premier League fixtures against newly promoted sides.
Opta highlighted the scale of that record, noting a piece of unwanted Premier League history for Liverpool. The data company reported that Liverpool became the first defending champions
in the competition not to beat any promoted side at home in a season, after three Anfield draws with Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds.

The draw with Burnley also extends a longer trend. For the first time since the 1980-81 top-flight season, Liverpool have gone through an entire home league schedule against promoted opponents without a win. Back then they had a record of one draw and two defeats, while this season features three successive draws.
Dominik Szoboszlai had a chance to put Liverpool firmly in control from the penalty spot. The midfielder struck the crossbar, and Florian Wirtz then scored from open play. Marcus Edwards later equalised for Burnley, cancelling Wirtz’s effort and tilting the mood around Anfield.
Liverpool’s attacking numbers showed heavy pressure despite the result. The side attempted 32 shots, with 11 efforts on target, and total expected goals of 3.18. That shot count is Liverpool’s highest in a Premier League match since a meeting with Brentford in January of the previous season, when they recorded 37 attempts.
There were further near-misses across the match. Cody Gakpo saw one effort cleared off the line, while Hugo Ekitike had a finish ruled out for offside. Liverpool also needed Alisson to intervene when an Ibrahima Konate touch almost produced an own goal shortly before Edwards’ leveller.

"I agree that we should have won this game, Slot said. There wasn't a lot more I could ask in terms of chance creation. We have a lot of ball possession but I would love us to create more. If we play a bit more open you always wonder if the other team can counter-attack you more, which you couldn't. I don't know how many moments we had, but we could only score one. They come in different fashions. Sometimes it is that we are scoring a goal in stoppage time and you expect to win the game and then you concede another goal in stoppage time. But yeah, in football, one team can have two chances - one was almost an own goal by us - and score one goal while the other team has multiple chances and scores just one goal as well. "
"In my head it wasn't booing but in my head it was frustration as well, Slot told BBC Sport. If you, as Liverpool, are not disappointed by having a draw at home to Burnley then something is completely wrong. I completely understand the frustration. I have the same frustrations and the players definitely have the same frustrations as the fans. "
Slot’s comments underline how Liverpool view the result as two points lost rather than one gained. The team dominated territory and created chances but failed to secure victory, while historical statistics underline the scale of their home struggles against promoted Premier League sides this season.
