Former IPL founder Lalit Modi has shared a pessimistic view on Formula 1's chances of returning to India, stating that the sport remains "far, far away" from making a comeback despite recent speculation around a potential 2027 race.
His remarks came shortly after Formula 1 dismissed reports suggesting India could return to the calendar as early as 2027.
Lalit Modi questions readiness for F1 India return
Taking to social media, Lalit Modi expressed doubts about India's infrastructure readiness to host Formula 1 again, suggesting the country is still some distance away from meeting the sport's evolving global standards.
"Chances are Zero for @F1 in India. Far far away. Infrastructure not there. I can tell you that from what I see how the Formula 1 is developing as a global iconic brand," Modi wrote.
His comments add to the growing debate around India's readiness to host major global motorsport events, particularly as the Formula 1 calendar continues to expand into new markets.
F1 rules out India return for 2027
Formula 1 has already clarified that India will not feature on the 2027 calendar, despite reports linking the return of the Indian Grand Prix to the Buddh International Circuit.
A spokesperson confirmed that while India remains an important market with a passionate fanbase, a return within that timeframe is not currently planned due to limited calendar slots and strong competition from other host nations.
The Buddh International Circuit last hosted Formula 1 races between 2011 and 2013 before the event was discontinued due to taxation issues and administrative challenges.

Despite the setback for 2027, discussions around Formula 1's long-term return to India remain ongoing, with government officials and private stakeholders previously expressing interest in reviving the event.
