In a landmark move that reshapes the landscape of The Hundred, the Northern Superchargers have officially been renamed Sunrisers Leeds following their complete acquisition by the Sun Group.
The rebranding
marks the first time an IPL team owner has taken full control of a franchise in the 100-ball competition, signaling the beginning of a new era for the Leeds-based outfit.
The transition comes after months of negotiation, during which the Sun Group-owners of the IPL's Sunrisers Hyderabad and SA20's Sunrisers Eastern Cape-first secured Yorkshire County Cricket Club's entire stake in the side. The deal, worth an estimated ₹1,092 crore, grants the group 100 percent ownership, making Sunrisers Leeds the newest member of the global Sunrisers family.
The rebranding aligns with Sun Group's strategy of creating a unified identity across their cricketing ventures. Much like their teams in India and South Africa, Sunrisers Leeds are expected to adopt the iconic orange-and-black color palette, moving away from the Northern Superchargers' long-standing purple theme. The franchise will continue to field competitive men's and women's teams, with Daniel Vettori staying on as head coach of the men's squad and Adrian Birrell leading the women's unit.
Players contracted under the Northern Superchargers banner are expected to remain with the team during the transition, ensuring continuity ahead of the 2026 season.
For Sun Group, the acquisition represents a major step in expanding its footprint in global franchise cricket. With teams now competing in three major markets-India, South Africa, and England-the group has solidified its position as one of the sport's most influential multi-team owners.
The move also reflects the ECB's broader strategy of inviting IPL investment into The Hundred. Last year, four IPL owners were designated as "strategic partners" in the competition, paving the way for increased foreign involvement. Sun Group's complete takeover of the Leeds franchise is the most significant development yet under this framework.
As the 2026 season approaches, anticipation is building around how Sunrisers Leeds will shape their new identity, culture, and on-field performances. One thing, however, is certain: The Hundred has entered a new phase-powered by the growing global reach of the Sunrisers brand.
