Leeds United avoided an FA Cup shock at Pride Park, overturning an early deficit to defeat Derby County 3-1 in the third round. The win came a week after Daniel Farke's side lost 4-3 to Newcastle United in a dramatic
Premier League match.
Despite going behind, Leeds controlled much of the play and ended with 2.58 expected goals compared with Derby's 0.42 xG. Derby struggled to create clear chances after half-time, while Leeds' attacking pressure finally told as three different players found the net.
The first major twist arrived when Joel Piroe failed to convert a penalty, missing from the spot for Leeds. Almost immediately, Derby struck at the other end, with Ben Brereton Diaz scoring just two minutes after that missed opportunity to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Leeds responded strongly after the interval and displayed greater composure in the final third. Wilfried Gnonto equalised in the 55th minute with a fierce first-time strike. Ao Tanaka then completed the turnaround from close range, finishing after Jacob Widell Zetterstrom pushed out Piroe's effort into a dangerous central area.

With Derby increasingly blunt in attack, Karl Darlow faced little danger during the closing stages. James Justin added a late third goal for Leeds in stoppage time, side-footing in the defender's first goal for the Whites to seal safe passage.
The victory continued a dominant recent record for Leeds against Derby in all competitions. Derby have lost seven of the last nine meetings between the clubs, including four defeats in a row. Leeds have also advanced in each of the last five FA Cup ties between the sides, in 1967-68, 1972-73, 1974-75, 1995-96 and now 2025-26.
| Team | Goals | Expected goals (xG) | Goalkeeper saves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds United | 3 | 2.58 | - |
| Derby County | 1 | 0.42 | 8 (Jacob Widell Zetterstrom) |
Zetterstrom's performance restricted the damage for Derby, as the goalkeeper produced eight saves, matching the most stops made in any of Zetterstrom's matches for the Rams. Even so, Leeds' control, clinical second-half finishing and strong record in this fixture ensured safe progress to the next round.
