London City Lionesses opened the Eder Maestre tenure with a goalless draw against Liverpool in the Women’s Super League, as both sides failed to register a shot on target at St Helens Stadium, leaving Liverpool winless and bottom and London City Lionesses in seventh place after another frustrating afternoon in front of goal.
The match produced very little attacking quality, with a combined expected goals figure of only 0.58, split 0.41 for Liverpool and 0.17 for London City Lionesses from nine total attempts, and Liverpool’s wait for a first Women’s Super League win of the season therefore continued.
Liverpool’s poor start now draws comparison with previous long droughts in a Women’s Super League campaign, as only Reading in 2016 with 13 games,
Everton in 2014 who failed to win all 14 matches, Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2016 with 15 games, and Yeovil Town in 2017-18 who failed to win all 18, have waited longer for an opening victory.
Defending was stronger than attacking for both Liverpool and London City Lionesses, especially in the first half when a mistake by London City goalkeeper Elene Lete gifted Liverpool the best early chance, yet Lete recovered quickly as Ceri Holland closed in, while later Alice Bergstrom almost beat Lete with a chip from the edge of the box.
Bergstrom threatened again for Liverpool but was denied by a crucial block from Elena Linari, then a swift Liverpool counter-attack ended with Holland firing over the crossbar, and the home crowd saw further frustration captured by the club’s post-match message, "A point apiece. "

The stalemate also affects wider managerial records in the Women’s Super League, as only Jamie Sherwood with Yeovil across 26 matches and Kelly Chambers with Reading over 13 games have begun a spell at one club with a longer winless sequence than Liverpool boss Taylor, adding pressure while Maestre’s London City Lionesses continue a steadier mid-table campaign.
