Vithya Ramraj ran into Indian athletics history at the 2026 Asian Games, but the bronze medal had her twin sister Nithya's heartbeat stitched into it. Vithya clocked 54.75 seconds in the women's 400m hurdles final in Aichi-Nagoya, breaking P.T. Usha's 42-year-old national record of 55.42 seconds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Away from the track, Nithya was in Chennai, too anxious to watch the race live, praying with her eyes shut as her sister carried both their dreams over ten hurdles.
Two Sisters, One Long Road From Erode
The Ramraj twins' story did not begin with stadium lights. It began with a mother who refused to let three daughters be boxed into small-town pessimism. Vithya and Nithya grew up near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, daughters of Ramraj and Meena, and their mother pushed
them into sport because she wanted them to have careers, income, and independence.
That decision took them to a sports hostel in Erode, where childhood closeness became discipline. Vithya later said her father, a driver, had to borrow money to buy shoes, while her mother stayed with them in the hostel and made them pursue athletics seriously (via ).
The bond was never decorative. It was practical, stubborn, and almost umbilical. In an Indian Express interview from their early senior years, Vithya said she and Nithya sat together from Class 1 till their final year of college and even chose the same subjects so they could remain together. When Nithya was once shifted to another school section, Vithya cried all day until their mother requested the principal to put them back together.
Sport eventually gave them different lanes. Nithya took up 100m hurdles, while Vithya moved toward the 400m and later the 400m hurdles. But the emotional traffic between them never slowed. Vithya once said (via ), "To date, I do not have a single close friend, and it is Nithya who has always been my close friend. We share everything between us - even the secrets. "
Nithya's Prayer Became Vithya's Medal
The 2026 Asian Games medal was not only about one clean race. It was the latest chapter in a family ledger full of IOUs, sacrifice, and sisterly barter. When Vithya's career stalled and she left the national camp to train under coach Nehpal Singh Rathore, Nithya, who had secured a job with the Income Tax Department, helped pay for shoes, supplements, travel, and accommodation before Vithya later got a job with Indian Railways.
The roles later reversed. Times of India reported that after Nithya supported Vithya financially in 2021, Vithya stepped in last year to help with Nithya and the family's needs. That is siblinghood without frills: not speeches, but bills paid; not slogans, but shoes bought.
Nithya missed the 2026 Asian Games, and that absence became part of Vithya's fuel. Nithya said Vithya told her not to worry and promised (via ), "I will do double of what you would have done had you been part of the Asian Games. " Nithya added, "That is why she dedicated the medal to me. "
That promise did not remain sentimental talk. Vithya won mixed 4x400m relay silver earlier at the Games, then broke the national 400m hurdles record for bronze, and later helped India win women's 4x400m relay gold in 3:29.69 alongside Kiran Pahal, Poovamma Machettira, and Prachi.
Vithya's 54.75 will go into the record books, but the better story is the invisible twin lane beside her. Nithya did not run in Aichi-Nagoya, yet she was everywhere: in the childhood hostel, in the bought shoes, in the phone calls before races, in the prayer she could barely sit through, and in the medal Vithya dedicated to her. Some athletes carry a flag; Vithya carried her sister too.
