Cooper Flagg delivered a 51-point performance for the Dallas Mavericks against the Orlando Magic, yet stressed that the Rookie of the Year race is not the focus. The Mavericks lost 138-127 on Friday, but the 19-year-old still set an NBA landmark, becoming the youngest rookie ever to score at least 50 points.
Flagg’s scoring burst included 24 points in the fourth quarter, giving Dallas late hope before Orlando closed out the win. The display also made Flagg the ninth rookie in league history with a 50-point game, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Rick Barry, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes, Allen Iverson, George Mikan and Earl Monroe.
That 51-point outing added to a growing list of milestones for Flagg in this debut season. Flagg has already
matched rare scoring company, joining Michael Jordan as the only players to record multiple 45-point games as rookies. Those numbers have pushed Flagg into discussions around the Rookie of the Year award despite Dallas’ defeat.
Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets is widely viewed as the leading contender at this stage. Knueppel is averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists, giving voters another strong rookie option. Yet Flagg has tried to place personal awards behind daily improvement and long-term development.
It is what it is, Flagg said regarding the Rookie of the Year race. "For me, like I've said before, it's just about getting better every single day. I know what I'm capable of and what I can do. So for me, it's always been about just improving every night, going out there, competing, being the player that I know I can be, and I'll let all the rest of the stuff figure it out. "

Across the season, Flagg is averaging 20.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists for Dallas. With those figures, Flagg is close to joining Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and former Mavericks star Luka Doncic as the only rookies since the 1976-77 ABA-NBA merger to average at least 20 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Flagg was asked whether scoring 51 points might influence award voters after such a high-profile effort. "I'm not sure," Flagg said. "I would hope it would help, but like I said, I'm not going to worry about that. I'm going to worry about just getting better every single night and trying to look at a big picture and start building towards something. "
| Player | Team | Points per game | Rebounds per game | Assists per game |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cooper Flagg | Dallas Mavericks | 20.8 | 6.6 | 4.5 |
| Kon Knueppel | Charlotte Hornets | 18.8 | 5.4 | 3.4 |
The game in Orlando also featured a tense moment early in the fourth quarter. Desmond Bane appeared to shove Flagg in the back as Bane tried to commit a foul, but no whistle followed. Flagg reacted angrily, confronting referee Sean Corbin and receiving the second technical foul of Flagg’s NBA career.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd also challenged the non-call and was given a technical as well. After further protests, officials ejected Kidd, who then had to watch the remainder of the contest from the locker room. That sequence added frustration to an already demanding night for Dallas despite Flagg’s scoring output.
"I think it was warranted. I'm not going to lie," Flagg said of the Mavs' reactions to the no-call. "I mean, I talked to Bane after the play. He told me he was intentionally trying to foul me, and so I honestly don't know how three of them [officials] out there didn't see that. I mean, obviously, he must not have had the right view, or they weren't paying attention, but they missed it. So, I think that type of reaction is warranted because there's not really an excuse. "
Flagg’s performance against Orlando underlined both individual progress and the pressure of a lengthy season. Dallas left with a loss, yet Flagg’s record-setting night, season averages and place alongside names like Jordan, Bird and Doncic keep the Rookie of the Year debate active, even as Flagg insists development and team growth stay ahead of awards.
