Serge Gnabry has confirmed that an adductor injury has ruled the Bayern Munich midfielder out of the World Cup. The 30-year-old has stated that there will be no further appearances this season. Germany will now travel to the tournament without Gnabry for Group E games against Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
The finals are scheduled to start on June 11, with Germany’s first World Cup match against Curacao on June 14. Before the tournament, Germany face Finland and the United States in friendly matches. Coaches now need to adjust attacking plans, as Gnabry has been an important creative option.
Bayern Munich initially announced on Saturday that Gnabry was set to be sidelined for an extended spell. At that point, there was only speculation about
his World Cup chances. Those doubts have now been confirmed, removing one of Germany’s most experienced forwards from contention during a key international tournament.
Across all competitions this season, Gnabry has scored 10 goals and delivered 12 assists. Within Bayern’s squad, only Harry Kane with 56, Michael Olise with 43 and Luis Diaz with 39 have more direct goal contributions. The loss of that output is significant for both Bayern and Germany’s attacking depth.
| Player | Direct goal involvements |
|---|---|
| Harry Kane | 56 |
| Michael Olise | 43 |
| Luis Diaz | 39 |
| Serge Gnabry | 22 |
"The last few days have been tough to process," he wrote on social media. "A Bayern season which still holds much to play for after securing another Bundesliga title on the weekend. As for the World Cup dream with Germany. That's sadly over for me.Like the rest of the country, I'll be supporting the boys from home. Now it's time to focus on recovery and getting back for pre-season. "
Bayern’s season continues with targets still available after the latest Bundesliga title, yet Gnabry now watches from the sidelines. Germany also reshapes plans for June’s friendlies and World Cup fixtures. Attention for Gnabry turns toward full rehabilitation, with the aim of returning for Bayern’s pre-season schedule.
