Mary Earps is returning to the Women’s Super League, signing a two-year contract with London City Lionesses after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. The 33-year-old goalkeeper moves back to England as a free agent and is expected to become a central figure for London City Lionesses, who finished sixth in their debut Women’s Super League season in 2025-26.
London City Lionesses are reshaping their squad around experienced international talent as they target rapid progress in the Women’s Super League. Alongside Mary Earps, the club have already secured France midfielder Grace Geyoro, winger Delphine Cascarino and Spain defender Jana Fernandez, signalling a push to challenge higher up the Women’s Super League table.
Earps left the Women’s Super League
two years earlier, when Manchester United agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain. During two campaigns in France, Earps made 41 league appearances, keeping 19 clean sheets as Paris Saint-Germain ended the 2024-25 season second and finished the 2025-26 campaign in third position.
Before the London City Lionesses move, Earps had confirmed retirement from England duty ahead of Euro 2025. Hannah Hampton then became Sarina Wiegman’s preferred goalkeeper, and England went on to retain the European title on penalties against Spain, with shoot-out success delivering a second straight trophy.
Earps played a major role in England’s breakthrough years under Sarina Wiegman. At Euro 2022, Earps started as first-choice goalkeeper as England claimed their first European Championship, defeating Germany 2-1 in extra time. One year later, Earps helped England reach the Women’s World Cup final, producing a key penalty save from Jennifer Hermoso.
Despite that stop from Jennifer Hermoso in the final, Spain edged that World Cup showpiece 1-0. Olga Carmona scored the only goal, denying Earps and England a first world title. Those tournaments confirmed Earps as one of the leading goalkeepers of her generation before the shift to Hannah Hampton for Euro 2025.
London City Lionesses are also assessing further high-profile additions around Mary Earps. The club have been linked with an ambitious move for two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who left Barcelona as a free agent. Any deal for Alexia Putellas would add another established international to a squad already strengthened for the Women’s Super League.
In a statement, Earps said: "The club's values represent what I want to represent, and they are passionate about what I want to achieve and change the game in a positive way. All the conversations have been really positive and every time I spoke with the club, I wanted to hear more. The vision and ambition, including the new training facility, is incredible and I'm looking forward to seeing that develop. It shows what our owner, Michele [Kang], and everyone at the club want to do in terms of really going for it. It's about putting a marker down and saying we want to be competitive in a short space of time. "

The combination of Mary Earps’ experience and London City Lionesses’ recruitment drive gives the club a stronger platform in the Women’s Super League. With new signings across midfield, attack and defence, plus a stated push to be competitive quickly, London City Lionesses enter the 2026-27 season with raised expectations and a clear strategy.
