India could be on the verge of pulling out of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) reportedly prioritising the much-hyped international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3.

The decision is not official yet, but two separate reports on Wednesday have pointed towards the same outcome: India are expected to withdraw from the regional tournament rather than compromise on the Brazil fixture.

The clash has left the AIFF with a difficult choice. The ASEAN Cup would give the senior national team a minimum of three competitive matches, while the Brazil friendly offers significantly greater commercial appeal and public interest.

The bigger issue, however, is that the federation cannot simply

Why India cannot play both tournaments with two teams

The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled from September 24 to October 3, with the final falling on the same day as India's proposed friendly against Brazil at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium.

The AIFF had reportedly explored the possibility of sending a second-string or B team to the ASEAN Cup while keeping its strongest squad available for Brazil.

Reports suggest the initial announcement of the Brazil friendly generated millions of digital impressions, while the prospect of hosting one of football's most recognisable national teams has created significant public and commercial interest.

An AIFF insider quoted by Sports Now summed up the thinking behind the preference for Brazil, saying the fixture had "created a lot of hype" and that Kolkata's fan base could help generate substantial revenue.

That makes the Brazil match more than just another friendly for the federation.

The ASEAN Cup would have given India more competitive football

The obvious downside is that India would be giving up a tournament opportunity.

The ASEAN Cup is not simply a one-off exhibition match. India would have had a minimum of three competitive fixtures during the competition, with the possibility of a fourth.
