Croatia star Luka Modric has created a unique record in their World Cup 2026 match against Ghana on Saturday (June 27).
The Croatian team secured a crucial 2-1 win over Ghana to cement their place in the knockouts of the competition. Petar Sucic gave them the lead, while Derrick Luckassen equalized in the second half. But in the 83rd minute, Luka Modric picked up Nikola Vlasic with a pass and the latter made no mistake to score, giving them a crucial win.
As Croatia progress to the Round of 32 stages, Modric himself has etched his name in the record books.
Luka Modric creates Assists Record
Luka Modric, with his assist, has now become the oldest to assist in a World Cup match, at the age of 40 years 291 days.
For Modrić, this assist is another chapter in an extraordinary international
career. The Ballon d'Or winner has now featured in every World Cup since 2006, captaining Croatia to a runner-up finish in 2018 and a third-place medal in 2022.
He continues to silence doubters with tireless pressing, pinpoint distribution, and leadership that inspires teammates half his age. Croatia's head coach praised the midfielder post-match: "Luka is timeless. He reads the game like no one else. "
The veteran has been pivotal for them over the years and is set to play a key role as well in the knockouts. As per the current standings, Croatia will face the top placed team in Group K, a place currently occupied by Portugal ahead of the final round of group stage matches.
But Modric's record will hand over to Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo if he registers an assist to his name in this World Cup.
