Thailand led hosts India 1-0 on a rain-hit opening day at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I Qualifiers, held at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association Stadium on Tuesday. Persistent showers caused long delays and forced two matches to be suspended overnight.
Play started nearly three hours late, with the first singles rubber beginning close to 6 p.m. Thailand's 23-year-old Anchisa Chanta defeated India's debutant Vaishnavi Adkar 6-1, 6-3 to give the visitors the early lead in the best-of-three-rubber tie.
Chanta outplays Adkar in straight sets.
Adkar, ranked No. 383, struggled early against Chanta, ranked No. 456, who used unorthodox two-handed groundstrokes on both wings. The Thai player raced to a 4-0 lead and controlled rallies to seal the first set 6-1 without facing any
serious pressure.
Adkar broke first in the second set and hinted at a fightback. Chanta replied with four straight games for a 4-1 lead. The Indian closed the gap to 4-3, but Chanta broke again and served out the match in one hour and 13 minutes.
The 6-1, 6-3 win improved Chanta's singles record in the Billie Jean King Cup to 8-1. Her victory placed Thailand 1-0 up against India, increasing pressure on the remaining singles and doubles rubbers in the Group I round-robin tie.
Cheapchandej leads Yamalapalli in suspended second singles
In the second singles rubber, Thai veteran Patcharin Cheapchandej led Sahaja Yamalapalli 6-4, 1-6, 4-3 when rain again halted play. Umpires suspended the contest until Wednesday morning, with Thailand just two games away from clinching the tie against India.
Yamalapalli, ranked No. 384, dropped serve early in the first set but broke back to level. Cheapchandej, ranked No. 449, secured a late break to take the set 6-4. The Indian answered in style, dominating the second set to win it 6-1.
Cheapchandej, who holds a 7-3 singles record in the competition, broke early in the deciding set to lead 3-1. Yamalapalli fought back to 3-3, but the Thai player broke again in the seventh game before heavy rain stopped play for the second time.
The Cheapchandej-Yamalapalli match will resume at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The doubles rubber, featuring India's Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale against Thailand's Thasaporn Naklo and Peangtarn Plipuech, is scheduled to follow on the same court at the DLTA complex.
