UP Brij Stars continued their unbeaten start to the Big Cricket League Season 2, while Mumbai Marines returned to winning ways after a thrilling three-wicket victory over Northern Challengers in Greater Noida on Friday.
UP Brij Stars maintain Big Cricket League winning streak
UP Brij Stars made it three wins from three matches with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Gujarat Diamonds.
After restricting Gujarat Diamonds to 114 all out in 19.4 overs, UPBS chased down the target in just 16.3 overs to strengthen their grip on the top spot.
Miguel Cummins led the bowling effort with figures of 4/23, while Jeevan Mendis (2/16) and Vishal Gurjar (2/28) provided excellent support. Gujarat Diamonds struggled to build momentum despite contributions from Asela Gunaratne (25) and captain Upul Tharanga (22).
In reply, UPBS suffered an early blow when Kennar Lewis departed for a duck, but Jermaine Blackwood counterattacked with 36 off 24 balls, including three sixes. After a brief wobble at 56/3, skipper Chirag Gandhi anchored the chase with an unbeaten 38 off 27 balls, while Shubham Singh remained unbeaten on 36 as the leaders cruised home with 21 balls to spare.
The win keeps UP Brij Stars unbeaten through their opening three matches.
Mumbai Marines survive late scare to defeat Northern Challengers
In the day's second game, Mumbai Marines held their nerve to chase down 154 and register a crucial three-wicket win over Northern Challengers.
Asked to bat first, Northern Challengers recovered from an early collapse to post 153/6. Anureet Singh struck twice inside the first three overs to remove Ayush Sachdeva and Phil Mustard, leaving NC under pressure.
Angelo Perera (25), Nitish Sharma (35) and Rishi Dhawan (36) rebuilt the innings with useful contributions, while Shoaib Khan added 20. A late cameo from Subodh Bhatti, who smashed an unbeaten 14 off just five deliveries, pushed Northern Challengers past the 150-run mark.
Mumbai's bowling effort was led by Anureet Singh (2/21) and Manan Sharma (2/21), with Mohamed Amaan and Dhananjay Singh picking up a wicket each.
The chase began shakily as Mumbai slipped to 24/3 inside four overs. However, captain Ross Taylor (21) and Naman Ojha (21) steadied proceedings before Shivansh Kapoor produced the match-winning innings.
Kapoor smashed 51 off just 30 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes, while Anureet Singh added a vital unbeaten 24 from 14 balls at the death. Despite regular wickets, Mumbai reached 159/7 with one ball remaining to seal their first win of the campaign.
Rishi Dhawan and Ankul Yadav claimed two wickets apiece for Northern Challengers, but their efforts were not enough to prevent a second consecutive defeat.
