Roberto De Zerbi has left his position as Olympique de Marseille manager by mutual consent after the 5-0 Ligue 1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, a defeat that kept Marseille fourth in the table and 12 points behind leaders PSG in the title race.
The heavy reverse at Parc des Princes was Marseille's third league defeat in seven matches, alongside three wins and one draw, matching the number of losses from their previous 19 Ligue 1 games and raising concern about securing Champions League football for next season.
Club officials confirmed the split in an official communication, stressing that the decision followed internal talks about sporting priorities for the final stretch of the campaign and the need to protect Marseille's chances of returning
to the Champions League group stage.
"Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, coach of the first team, have announced the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement, Marseille said in a statement. Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club's managementthe owner, president, director of football, and coachit was decided to make a change at the helm of the first team. This was a difficult collective decision, taken after careful consideration in the best interests of the club, in order to respond to the sporting challenges of the end of the season. "

De Zerbi, appointed in June 2024 after leaving Brighton, oversaw 69 competitive fixtures with Marseille, winning 39, drawing eight and losing 22, while in that period only Luis Enrique's PSG scored more Ligue 1 goals than Marseille, with PSG hitting 140 and Marseille recording 120.
Under De Zerbi, Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 in the 2024-25 season and earned a return to UEFA's main club competition, yet the team exited the Champions League at the first stage, adding pressure as this campaign's inconsistent domestic form developed.
Olympique de Marseille manager search and Habib Beye link
Attention now shifts to finding a successor, with early reports indicating that Habib Beye, dismissed by Rennes earlier this week, has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next Olympique de Marseille manager, although the club has not confirmed any agreement or timetable for an appointment.
The change in the Marseille dugout arrives at a key moment, with qualification targets still within reach but margins reduced, and the next coach likely expected to stabilise results quickly while building on De Zerbi's attacking platform in both Ligue 1 and European competition.
