Delhi Capitals made five big changes in their crucial must-win encounter against the Punjab Kings. The squad rotation also saw a 21-year-old pacer from Madhya Pradesh, Madhav Tiwari, play the first game of the season. Tiwari paid off the trust put in him by skipper Axar Patel as he removed the dangerous Priyansh Arya, who was on a marauding run in the 8th over.
Tiwari ended the innings with 2 wickets from his quota of four overs and gave away 40 runs at an economy of 10.00.
Who Is Madhav Tiwari?
Born on September 28, 2003 in Mauganj, Madhya Pradesh, Madhav Tiwari is one of the emerging young talents in Indian cricket. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he is yet to feature in senior domestic cricket, having not made his First-Class or List-A debut so far. Despite this,
the bowling all-rounder has already caught attention, earning a contract with the Delhi Capitals for ₹40 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Tiwari made his Indian Premier League debut against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in 2025. Batting at No. 8, he managed just three runs and did not get an opportunity to bowl in that outing.
He has, however, gained valuable experience in domestic T20 competitions. Tiwari represented Bhopal Leopards in the 2025 Madhya Pradesh T20 League, where he shared the dressing room with Aniket Verma and played under the captaincy of Arshad Khan. In that tournament, he scored 108 runs in five innings at an impressive strike rate of 180, including a standout knock of 65 off 31 balls in the semi-final against Rewa Jaguars, helping his side reach the final.
At the junior level, Tiwari has represented Madhya Pradesh in the Under-19 and Under-23 categories. He also featured in the 2024-25 CK Nayudu Trophy, where he registered two half-centuries, further underlining his potential as a promising all-rounder.
PBKS Cross The 200-run Mark
Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings delivered a commanding batting performance to post a formidable 215/6 against Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in IPL 2026.
Punjab got off to a flying start in the Powerplay, courtesy of openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. Arya took the attack to Mitchell Starc, smashing 22 runs in the opening over, as PBKS raced to 70 without loss inside five overs. Arya led the charge with a quickfire 56 off 33 balls before being dismissed by Madhav Tiwari, who picked up his maiden IPL wickets.
After the early breakthroughs, skipper Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a composed yet aggressive knock. He stitched a crucial partnership with Cooper Connolly, bringing up his half-century in just 32 balls. Connolly contributed a valuable 38 off 27 deliveries before falling late in the innings, again to Tiwari.
Delhi fought back in the death overs through Starc, who removed Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh in quick succession. However, Suryansh Shedge provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 17 off just seven balls, ensuring Punjab crossed the 200-run mark comfortably. With contributions across the batting order and a strong platform set early, Punjab Kings put themselves in a dominant position heading into the second innings.
