West Ham missed the opportunity to escape the Premier League relegation zone due to Georginio Rutter's late equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Brighton. Rutter's first league goal of the season levelled
the score after Jarrod Bowen had put West Ham ahead at the American Express Stadium. The match ended dramatically, leaving both teams with a point each.
Throughout the game, West Ham appeared more threatening in attack. Lucas Paqueta challenged Brighton's goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen, with a long-range effort in the first half. After halftime, Verbruggen made an impressive double save to deny both Bowen and Crysencio Summerville from extending West Ham's lead.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Bowen connected with Callum Wilson's pass and directed it into the far corner of the net. However, Brighton responded strongly. Mats Wieffer's deflected cross was tipped onto the bar by Alphonse Areola before Rutter secured a point for Brighton with a powerful low shot in stoppage time.
The late equaliser was subject to a VAR check for handball but stood as a valid goal. This result means Brighton have not won any of their last six home games against teams starting the day in the relegation zone, drawing all six matches.

Despite their efforts, West Ham have now conceded five goals in or after the 90th minute this season. Only Newcastle United and Leeds United have let in more late goals, each conceding six times. This defensive frailty has cost them valuable points throughout their campaign.
Bowen’s goal marked his 99th involvement for West Ham in Premier League goals (60 goals and 39 assists). Only Michail Antonio has more contributions for the club, with 101 (68 goals and 33 assists). Bowen continues to be a key player for West Ham despite their struggles this season.
Brighton's Offensive Challenges
Brighton struggled offensively during most of the match. They failed to register a single shot on target until Rutter’s equaliser in stoppage time. This was their first such occurrence since March 2022 against Tottenham Hotspur. Rutter’s goal was his first Premier League strike of this campaign and came from his 19th attempt on goal.
This draw leaves both teams reflecting on missed opportunities and defensive lapses. As they continue their campaigns, addressing these issues will be crucial for improving their standings in future matches.
