Suchika Tariyal has won a historic bronze medal for India in mixed martial arts at the Asian Games 2026, becoming the country's first MMA medallist at the continental Games.
The 36-year-old Indian competed in the women's Traditional MMA 60kg category, with MMA making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya. Tariyal had secured a medal by reaching the semifinals after defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Her campaign ended in the semifinal against Singapore's Teo Hui Hoon, with Tariyal settling for bronze after a closely fought contest. The defeat nevertheless secured her a place in Indian sporting history as the country's maiden Asian Games MMA medallist.
As per the latest understanding, the Indian team was not happy
with the verdict and may challenge the semifinal decision. Suchika was not happy with it and showed her displeasure on the mat, and then broke down into tears despite her stellar effort.
From Judo To MMA
Tariyal's achievement is particularly notable given her long and varied combat-sports career. The Rohtak-born athlete has represented India in several disciplines, including judo, kurash and jiu-jitsu, before moving into MMA. She is also an eight-time national judo champion.
Her journey into martial arts began as a teenager after an incident of harassment left her determined to learn self-defence. She subsequently built a career across multiple combat disciplines before turning her attention to MMA.
Tariyal was also a 2024 world champion in jiu-jitsu, adding to a resume that already featured significant success across combat sports.
A Landmark Medal For Indian MMA
The bronze represents a significant milestone for Indian combat sports. With MMA being introduced to the Asian Games programme for the first time in Aichi-Nagoya, Tariyal became the first Indian athlete to stand on the podium in the discipline.
Her medal also adds another chapter to India's growing Asian Games campaign, while highlighting the experience and adaptability of a veteran athlete who has successfully transitioned between multiple combat sports.
