Kolkata Knight Riders face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next IPL 2026 clash, and attention has turned to Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan international has travelled with the squad for nearly two weeks, yet KKR are still weighing up whether to hand Pathirana a first appearance this season.
Pathirana has already been available for matches against the Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants. The management, however, kept faith with the existing bowling group and did not alter the overseas combination, leaving Pathirana on the bench despite being part of the matchday squad.
Matheesha Pathirana Fitness Update
Recent training sessions suggest Pathirana is close to peak bowling fitness, boosting his chances for Hyderabad. Bowling coach Tim Southee confirmed that the fast bowler
has settled into the environment and impressed in nets, though the final call will hinge on conditions in the upcoming fixture.
"Yeah, he's arrived. He's been around the group for a little bit now. So, we'll look at conditions and make a decision on the side that we think is best for tomorrow's game. He's been bowling well at training, and it's great to have him as a part of the side," said Southee.
Matheesha Pathirana KKR selection, match-ups and overseas balance
Pathirana's record against Sunrisers Hyderabad offers tactical appeal. Across three IPL games versus Hyderabad, Pathirana has taken three wickets at a bowling average of 22. Match-ups with Heinrich Klaasen stand out, as Pathirana has dismissed Klaasen three times in the league, conceding only 23 runs from 14 balls.
Southee stressed that such statistics matter, but the four-overseas-player rule restricts changes. "Yeah, you consider several things for selection. Obviously, the balance of the side, make-up of your team. Here with the IPL, your makeup with the overseas has to change, obviously, when you make those changes. So, those decisions will be taken into account along with the conditions that we're looking to be faced with tomorrow," said Southee.
KKR, who sit eighth after consecutive wins over Rajasthan and Lucknow, now must decide if Pathirana's specific strengths justify reshaping the current winning combination.
