Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in the TATA IPL 2026 Southern Derby. On JioHotstar's Match Centre Live', JioStar experts R Ashwin and Faf du Plessis analysed CSK's defeat and growing concerns.
Both experts highlighted CSK's inexperienced squad, the lack of a reliable death bowler, and underperforming frontline bowlers. They also discussed Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy challenges and the mental strain of back-to-back losses on a young leader in a demanding franchise environment.
Ashwin points to youth and dressing room hurt
R Ashwin said it was hard to describe CSK's loss to RCB. He called RCB-CSK one of the most celebrated IPL clashes and noted Chennai will face Bengaluru only once this season, adding weight to the setback.
Ashwin pointed to several issues in the
CSK squad, stressing the number of inexperienced players. He felt accountability was difficult to demand at their age. He said young players should enjoy cricket rather than chase a heavy legacy from the start.
He expected the dressing room atmosphere to be hurt and possibly deflating after such a thumping defeat. Ashwin said a young side has only one direction, upwards, and urged a strong work ethic and a positive team environment as the way forward.
Du Plessis flags lack of death-bowling weapon
Faf du Plessis recalled that, after last season, questions were raised about CSK's playing method. He said the small auction brought good buys, with young batters added to make the middle order more explosive and provide fresh options.
However, he identified a major gap. Du Plessis asked who the marquee death bowler was for Chennai, especially when pressure peaked. Against RCB, he felt CSK bowled well in the Powerplay but missed early chances that could have left RCB 30 for 3.
He underlined Tim David's impact at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Du Plessis said CSK needed bowling weapons, experienced in pressure overs, to restrict the total near 220. He felt 220 was chaseable, but no Chennai bowler could slow David down.
Batting quality present, bowling bench must step up
Looking at CSK's batting, du Plessis said the quality was clear. He urged backing Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain, calling him proven, and praised Sanju Samson as a class player who answered critics during the T20 World Cup.
He also highlighted youngster Ayush Mhatre, describing his short IPL career as exceptional so far. Du Plessis said the top three had strong talent and simply needed time together. He argued Samson was too good to fail repeatedly in the league.
For du Plessis, CSK's main problem was bowling, not batting. He said the team must improve with the ball. With the main bowlers not firing, he recommended looking to the bench and giving chances to hungry bowlers seeking to prove themselves.
Gaikwad's leadership under pressure
Du Plessis said consecutive defeats are hard for a young captain, especially when personal form dips. He spoke of the weight of pressure and expectation that comes with wearing the yellow shirt and representing a trophy-driven fan base.
He noted fans expect semi-finals, finals, and titles from CSK. Du Plessis said every good captain faces such phases, needing a thick skin. He believes this period could help Gaikwad grow as a leader and as a player.
Du Plessis said Gaikwad has a good head and a strong support staff. He pointed to MS Dhoni, expected to return soon, as a crucial guiding figure. He felt these factors could help Gaikwad emerge stronger from current hardships.
