Germany and Spain played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Nations League final, with Germany left regretting missed opportunities. The match took place at Fritz-Walter-Stadion, where the reigning
world champions struggled against Germany's swift attacks. However, Spain's goalkeeper Cata Coll delivered an outstanding performance, keeping her team in contention for the title with a chance to win at home next week.
Germany began the match energetically, with Klara Buhl testing Coll early on. Despite this, Laia Alexandri nearly scored for Spain against the run of play, only for her shot to be cleared off the line. Jule Brand also saw her effort blocked before crossing the goal line. Franziska Kett and Rebecca Knaak had their attempts saved by Coll as Germany dominated the first half.
In the second half, Germany continued to press forward. Sjoeke Nusken and Selina Cerci came close to scoring as Spain struggled to capitalise on their possession. A quick counter-attack almost resulted in a goal when Buhl's shot hit the post before being cleared. Later, Brand's cross landed on the crossbar, much to Coll's relief.
Despite these chances, neither team managed to break the deadlock. Germany will feel disappointed not leading into the second leg but can take positives from their performance. They generated 1.29 expected goals (xG) from 16 shots while limiting Spain to seven attempts and 0.69 xG. Coll made five crucial saves that could prove decisive in securing a clean sheet.
Spain has only failed to win three times this year, including losses to England in both the Nations League group stage and European Championships final. This draw adds another non-win result for them this season.
The upcoming second leg promises intense competition as both teams aim for victory and the Nations League title.
