Rohit Sharma is absent from the Mumbai Indians lineup for their IPL clash against the Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Captain Hardik Pandya confirmed the development at the toss, stating that Rohit could miss a couple of matches as he recovers.
Punjab Kings opted to bowl first after winning the toss, while Mumbai brought in Quinton de Kock, who is set to open alongside fellow South African Ryan Rickelton.
How Did Rohit Sharma Get Injured?
Rohit sustained a hamstring injury during Mumbai's previous outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the same venue. The five-time champions were comfortably beaten in that match, losing by 18 runs in what turned out to be a one-sided contest.
The injury occurred while Rohit was batting, and despite receiving on-field treatment, he was unable
to continue. He walked off in the sixth over after scoring 19 off 13 balls and did not return, a setback that significantly dented Mumbai's chase.
The franchise's media team later indicated that further updates on Rohit's fitness would be shared in due course, leaving uncertainty around his return timeline.
Rohit Sharma's IPL 2025 vs IPL 2026 Form
Rohit Sharma has enjoyed a promising start to the Indian Premier League 2026, emerging as the Mumbai Indians' leading run-scorer despite an untimely injury setback. In four matches so far, Rohit has accumulated 137 runs at an impressive average of 45.67, coupled with a striking strike rate of 165.06, underlining his aggressive approach at the top.
His standout performance came against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29, where he smashed a blistering 78 off just 38 balls. The innings not only anchored Mumbai's victory but also featured his fastest IPL fifty, showcasing his ability to dominate attacks early in the tournament.
Rohit followed it up with a steady 35 off 26 balls against Delhi Capitals, though he managed only 5 against Rajasthan Royals in the next outing. His campaign, however, hit a roadblock during the April 12 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he scored 19 off 13 balls before retiring hurt due to a hamstring injury.
The injury has temporarily halted his momentum, but Rohit's early performances have already highlighted his importance to Mumbai's batting lineup. If he returns to full fitness soon, he is expected to play a crucial role in shaping MI's fortunes this season.
