East Bengal women's coach Anthony Andrews remains cautious and upbeat after his team's stunning 9-0 win in the Indian Women's League on Tuesday (December 30).
Around a hundred supporters at the Kalyani
Stadium witnessed history as East Bengal women's registered their biggest win over SESA FC. Fazila Ikwaput scored 4 goals while Soumya Guguloth also netted a hat-trick in a dominating performance.
With the win, the Red and Gold brigade have won thrice in their first three IWL matches this season. And while speaking after the match, Andrews stressed the need to continue vying for the title this season as well. East Bengal won the IWL last season and was also the inaugural SAFF Women's Club Championship winners, and after acknowledging that, Andrews dreams of more.
"Firstly, there is nothing easy in life. In general, in life or even in sports, nothing is easy. Every second day, there is someone chasing your dreams. Someone who wants to be like you and better than you. Obviously, that is the biggest challenge we face. However, the silverware we have got this year, it is all the hard work of these girls, who understand the importance of wearing the Red and Gold jersey. And my technical staff, who push them beyond boundaries to get what we want," Andrews said at the post-match press conference.
"We try to take one game and one tournament at a time. And then we only focus on that. Forgetting about what is going to happen in the next. And that is how we have done even in the AFC Champions League from SAFF and now IWL," he added.
Despite scoring nine goals, East Bengal squandered numerous gilt-edge opportunities. As they take on table toppers Nita Football Academy in the next match on January 2, Andrews speaks of more clinical finishing from his team.
"Yes, there is no denying that we have missed a lot of chances. But I also believe that sometimes it happens, and this should not repeat. I hope that we regroup and solve that. However, at this moment, I want them to enjoy the new year. Because they have been away from their family. And they have been working really hard for me. They can enjoy the next two nights (New Year's eve), and after that, we start again," he concluded.
