FIFA World Cup 2026: European champions Spain and South American giants Uruguay headline a competitive Group H at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which also features Saudi Arabia and tournament debutants Cape Verde.
One of the most anticipated fixtures in the group will see Spain take on Uruguay in Guadalajara, Mexico, on June 26 - the only Group H match scheduled outside the United States. Historically, the two former world champions have met twice in the World Cup, with both encounters ending in draws (1950 and 1990).
Spain will play two of their group-stage matches in Atlanta, while Uruguay's fixtures will include two games in Miami. Meanwhile, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia will meet in Houston in their only group-stage clash.
Spain Eye Strong World Cup Run
Spain entered the tournament
in strong form after winning Euro 2024 and the 2023 UEFA Nations League, while finishing runners-up in the 2025 edition. However, La Roja will look to improve their World Cup record, having not progressed beyond the round of 16 since their 2010 triumph.
Under head coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain is expected to rely on a talented core, including teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, defender Pau CubarsÍ, and midfield orchestrator Pedri. Manchester City's Rodri is also likely to return after recovering from injury.
Cape Verde Makes Historic Debut
Cape Verde, with a population of around 500,000, became one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup. The African side impressed during qualifying, winning all five home games without conceding a goal.
Coached by Pedro Leitao Brito, popularly known as Bubista, the team has steadily grown in stature and will be eager to make an impact on their debut.
Saudi Arabia Aims To Build On Momentum
Saudi Arabia will feature in their third consecutive World Cup, still remembered for their stunning 2-1 victory over Argentina in 2022. Managed by Herve Renard, who returned to the role in 2024, the team continues to benefit from the rising standards of its domestic league.
Despite reaching the round of 16 in 1994, Saudi Arabia has struggled to progress beyond the group stage in recent tournaments. They will also host the 2034 World Cup.
Uruguay Seeks Revival Under Bielsa
Two-time world champions Uruguay enter the tournament under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, though recent results have raised concerns. The side finished fourth in South American qualifying but is currently on a winless run in its last four matches.
Uruguay's squad features key players such as Federico Valverde, Ronald Araújo, and Manuel Ugarte, who will be crucial to their chances of advancing from a challenging group.
