AC Milan dropped more points in the Serie A title race after a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina, prompting visible frustration from Massimiliano Allegri, as familiar errors resurfaced and allowed Christopher Nkunku’s late goal to cancel out Pietro Comuzzo’s second-half opener at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday.
The result means Milan start 2026 with two straight league draws and stay second in Serie A, but the slip opens the door for rivals, with leaders Inter able to move one point clear, and still hold a game in hand, if Antonio Conte’s team defeat defending champions Napoli later on Sunday.
Despite Allegri’s clear anger, Milan extend a strong overall league sequence, as the Rossoneri remain unbeaten in 18 Serie A matches, matching a level last seen
between January and May 2004 under Carlo Ancelotti, when a 19-game run set the standard, and this current group has again limited defeats across the campaign.
Milan have now reached the halfway stage of this Serie A season having lost only once in 19 league fixtures, with a record of 11 wins and seven draws, something achieved only four times in the three-points-per-win era, after similar starts in 1995-96, 2003-04 and 2004-05.
Allegri’s main complaints centred on Milan repeating the same late-game errors seen in the previous draw with Genoa, especially after Nkunku’s equaliser, as Milan failed to manage the closing minutes with care despite having fought back into the contest through Comuzzo’s goal and controlled long periods before tiring.
Allegri described how the match slipped away, saying: "We had a good first half, and chances to score that we didn’t convert. Then, after the break, Fiorentina had more of the ball," and Milan then lost control of key phases when fatigue and poor decisions combined in the final third.
The head coach highlighted game management in the final minutes as a particular concern, stating: "After going a goal down, we had patience to get the ball into the final third, but after equalising, we made the same mistakes we did against Genoa. There were still seven minutes to go and with that much time, you cannot lose the ball cheaply, you’ve got to play it better near the penalty area. The lads know this. "
AC Milan Serie A rotation, tactics and key players
Allegri reshaped the starting side heavily compared with the previous league outing against Genoa, making six changes and leaving Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, Rafael Leao and Youssouf Fofana among the substitutes, with the coach seeking fresher legs after an intense schedule and looking to protect players who have logged heavy minutes this season.
Reflecting on those choices, Allegri explained: "I think we did a bit better after the changes, and we needed to be more focused on the set play, as these are situations that can transform a game," underlining how dead-ball moments remain decisive at this level when margins are often small.
Allegri praised several of the players who came into the line-up or carried big workloads, saying: "The team used up a lot of energy in the first half. [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, [Ardon] Jashari, [Samuele] Ricci and [Pervis] Estupinan did well. We needed to rest some players who have been regulars this season. "
The coach also addressed fitness issues in attack and assessed options in the centre-forward role, commenting: "It takes patience, because we want to reach the end of May in the top four, and that is not easy. Nkunku does well as a centre-forward. [Rafael] Leao wasn’t in good physical shape today, we are working to get everyone recovered, and I’m pleased. "
Allegri insisted that the broader objective is still within reach despite dropping points for the eighth time in Serie A this season, focusing on the race for Champions League qualification and maintaining perspective after a summer of major squad turnover that reshaped half of the group.
He stressed that longer-term targets remain intact, saying: "We have to focus on ourselves and getting back to winning ways, because we drew the last two, there are still 3436 points to go for a Champions League spot," before adding: "Let’s not lose sight of reality, we started with 50% of the squad changed, we’re doing well and must try to improve. "
From a statistical view, Milan’s blend of resilience and wastefulness defines the current Serie A campaign, with long unbeaten stretches offset by draws like this one against Fiorentina, and while Allegri’s side stay firmly in the hunt for the Scudetto and a top-four finish, further progress will depend on cutting out late errors and converting dominance into wins.
