Sahith Theegala and Justin Rose delivered contrasting but notable stories at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where Theegala secured a second straight Top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR and Rose dominated the field, winning by seven shots with a record 72-hole total.
Theegala closed with a bogey-free back nine and a superb 6-under 66, lifting the Indian-American to 14-under 274 and a tie for seventh. That result followed a tied-eighth finish at the American Express, giving Theegala consecutive strong weeks as the PGA TOUR season gathered pace in California.
Rose, aged 45, completed a wire-to-wire victory with a final-round 2-under 70, finishing at 23-under 265. That aggregate broke Tiger Woods's 72-hole tournament record from 1999 at Torrey
Pines. Rose's rounds of 62, 65, 69 and 70 came in unusually calm weather, yet the winning margin still underlined clear superiority.
No opponent came within six shots of Rose during the last round, and the Englishman tapped in for par on the 18th to complete a commanding win. The result gave Rose a 13th PGA TOUR title, a first wire-to-wire success at Torrey Pines since Tommy Bolt in 1955, and a second victory at this venue after 2019.
Theegala's 66 featured seven birdies and only one bogey, reflecting growing control under pressure. Theegala started with birdies at the first and third holes before dropping a shot on the fourth. Theegala then caught fire from the seventh to the tenth, rolling in four consecutive birdies from mid-range to surge up the Farmers Insurance Open leaderboard.
After that hot stretch, Theegala steadied with six straight pars, keeping momentum while others faltered. A further birdie on the 17th pushed Theegala deeper into red numbers, and a composed par at the last secured the Top-10. Theegala now turns focus to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, carrying confidence from consecutive strong Farmers Insurance Open and American Express performances.
Tournament results for Theegala, Rose and contenders at Torrey Pines
Further down the Farmers Insurance Open field, Sudarshan Yellamaraju carded a closing 72 and finished tied 56th, while Akshay Bhatia missed the cut after a difficult start. The chasers behind Rose were Si Woo Kim and Ryo Hisatsune, both signing for 69, and Pierceson Coody, who shot 66; the trio shared runner-up honours.
Brooks Koepka made a notable return to the PGA TOUR at Torrey Pines, ending the week with a 70. As Koepka holed a short birdie putt on the ninth green, several hundred spectators chanted, "Welcome back, Brooks. " Their reaction highlighted Koepka's status, even as Rose and Theegala drew most attention on the Farmers Insurance Open leaderboard.
Rankings impact for Theegala, Rose after Torrey Pines PGA TOUR event
Rose's display at Torrey Pines also carried major ranking consequences. The English golfer climbed to World No. 3, becoming the second-oldest player to hold that position, behind Vijay Singh in 2008. For Theegala, another Top-10 strengthened early-season form on the PGA TOUR and underlined steady progress among an experienced Farmers Insurance Open field.
