England fast bowler Mark Wood is racing against time to regain fitness before the World Test Championship home opener against New Zealand on 4 June at Lord's, as the 36-year-old continues a difficult recovery from major knee surgery and repeated setbacks.
Wood had surgery on his left knee in March 2025 and returned to Test cricket after a 15-month gap in the first Ashes Test against Australia in Perth late last year, but bowled only 11 overs before being ruled out of the remainder of the series.

Wood admitted the stakes feel higher at this stage of a long career. "Realistically, I've got maybe one more chance at doing this right. If I rush it back, then it's not good. That could be it. " The comments underline the pressure surrounding every step of his recovery.

"It's mega frustrating. It's been a long time, over a year since I had the initial surgery," Wood said. "To build it back up for seven months to play one game, and then be out again takes its toll. " The comments highlight the emotional strain alongside the physical challenge.
Across formats, Wood has collected 146 caps and 253 wickets for England, and is widely regarded among the fastest bowlers the country has produced. His last ODI came during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy in 2025, against Afghanistan in Lahore, before the latest knee problems.

The seamer, now 36, acknowledged that age complicates the path back. "With the age I'm at, I don't want to miss games. You want to be involved. I was bowling quickly and well before this injury started, and I haven't been able to get back to that level. " Wood's prospects now rest on how the knee responds in the coming months.
