For a long time, Indian javelin throw was dominated by one towering name. But behind the spotlight, a new generation has been steadily building its own story.
Yashvir Singh is one of those athletes.At just 24, Yashvir has already gone from making his international debut in 2025 to standing on the Commonwealth Games podium in 2026.
His rapid progress has been marked by one personal best after another, and now comes the biggest opportunity of his career so far, an Asian Games debut in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Yashvir has been added to India's Asian Games athletics squad as the replacement for Neeraj Chopra, who was ruled out after suffering an ankle ligament injury. The Athletics Federation of India has included Yashvir alongside Rohit Yadav in the men's
javelin team.
Yashvir's 2026 season has been a story of continuous improvement.
He began the year by taking his personal best beyond the 82m mark. At the Indian Athletics Series-9 in Ludhiana on June 13, he produced a throw of 82.93m, finishing second behind Rohit Yadav. It was already a significant improvement from his previous best.
But Yashvir was not finished. At the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, he raised the bar again with an 83.72m effort, continuing a remarkable run of improvement.
Then came Glasgow. At the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Yashvir entered a field containing some of the biggest names in world javelin.
After qualifying for the final, he found himself outside the medal positions for much of the competition. But when it mattered most, he produced the biggest throw of his career.
His final attempt travelled 85.41m, giving him a new personal best and securing the bronze medal.
The throw placed him behind Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who won gold with 89.75m, and Neeraj Chopra, who took silver with 85.83m. Yashvir's bronze completed a memorable double podium for India.
More importantly, the performance showed that Yashvir could deliver on a major international stage.
It was not simply anot his personal best. It was his first Commonwealth Games medal and the biggest senior international achievement of his career.
Yashvir's rise did not happen overnight.He first came into wider focus during the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. Competing in his first major international competition, he threw 82.57m to finish fifth in the men's javelin final. That mark was a personal best at the time and his second career throw beyond 80 metres.
The performance was significant because it showed that Yashvir could immediately compete at a high level internationally.
His next major challenge came at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
This time, the stage was even bigger. Yashvir was competing against many of the world's leading javelin throwers, but the experience proved to be a difficult yet valuable learning opportunity. He recorded 77.51m in qualification and missing out on the final.
For a young thrower experiencing his first World Championships, it was another important step in his development.
The numbers tell the story of Yashvir's progress. His 2025 breakthrough mark of 82.57m in Gumi was followed by 82.93m in Ludhiana, 83.72m in Bhubaneswar and finally 85.41m in Glasgow.
That progression reflects more than just bigger throws. It shows an athlete becoming increasingly comfortable competing at major events and producing his best when the pressure is highest.
Yashvir's latest opportunity has arrived because of Neeraj Chopra's withdrawal from the Asian Games, but his place in the squad comes after a season in which he has repeatedly demonstrated his progress.
The Asian Games will therefore represent another important test.
And now, Yashvir will compete at the continental multi-sport event, carrying the experience of a World Championships appearance and a Commonwealth Games medal with him.
He will line up alongside Rohit Yadav in India's men's javelin campaign at Aichi-Nagoya.
There is no question that the spotlight will be intense. But Yashvir has already shown during 2026 that he can handle increasingly bigger stages.
From an 82.57m breakthrough in Gumi to an 85.41m Commonwealth Games bronze in Glasgow, his journey has moved quickly.
Now, at the Asian Games, Yashvir Singh gets another opportunity to take Indian javelin forward, and perhaps produce another milestone in what is becoming a fascinating career.
