Chelsea slipped to a fourth straight Premier League defeat as Manchester United claimed a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge, tightening control of a potential top-five place and Champions League return while extending the Blues’ run of league games without a goal to four for the first time since 1998.
The decisive moment arrived late in the first half, when Bruno Fernandes escaped Alejandro Garnacho’s pressure and delivered a precise cross, allowing Matheus Cunha to score a fifth Premier League goal against Chelsea, more than Cunha has managed versus any other opponent in the competition.
Chelsea actually began with more intensity and possession, yet clear openings were scarce until Enzo Fernandez, available again after a club suspension, drove narrowly
off target just after the 30-minute mark, before United struck against the flow of play and then spent much of the second period defending deep.
After the interval, Liam Rosenior’s side controlled territory and finished with 21 attempts, generating 1.55 expected goals compared with United’s 0.29, but accuracy deserted Chelsea as only one effort needed saving, while Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana both hit the woodwork and Moises Caicedo, fresh from signing a new contract, drilled wide late on.
Michael Carrick’s team arrived with every senior centre-back unavailable, yet United’s reshaped defence coped, as Ayden Heaven and emergency central defender Noussair Mazraoui combined with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot to clear repeated deliveries, helping Senne Lammens through the match without facing a truly demanding stop despite Chelsea’s pressure.
That collective resilience means United now sit 10 points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, and Opta’s supercomputer calculates a 98.4% chance that Carrick’s side will secure a Champions League position, while Chelsea’s prospects of rescuing a top-five finish stand at only 8% after this sequence of four scoreless league defeats.
Within United’s display, Fernandes again directed much of the attacking play, recording an 18th Premier League assist of the season and moving within two of the single-season record of 20, currently shared by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry, while also strengthening an impressive campaign for creativity away from Old Trafford.

United’s narrow victory, achieved while rebounding from a surprise defeat to Leeds United, leaves the club close to returning to Europe after missing out entirely last season, whereas Chelsea’s wasteful attacking display deepened an already difficult domestic campaign despite long spells of control and a high volume of efforts on goal.
