The cricket world was left in shock as former Australia star Damien Martyn's physical condition came to light. Martyn, one of Australia's coveted batters, has been battling for his life after being diagnosed with meningitis.
Martyn, aged 54, was admitted on December 26, 2025-Boxing Day, after his health deteriorated, leading to the induced coma for treatment of the life-threatening infection. A Gold Coast Health spokesperson confirmed he remains in serious condition at the facility, with no further official medical bulletins released publicly.
He remains in a medically induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital while battling meningitis, but former teammate Adam Gilchrist shared encouraging news on New Year's Day.
Gilchrist noted positive developments
from recent tests, offering hope amid the former Australian batter's serious condition. Speaking on FOX Cricket, he revealed that Martyn showed positive signs over the last 24 hours.
"He is still in hospital. There will be more details coming out as they come to hand, but certainly in the last 24 hours, some positive signs are the indications coming out of the various tests he's having," the former keeper said. He added, "There has been so much interest and love. A fine player, terrific fella. I just hope he can continue his recovery," Gilchrist said.
Messages flooded in from the cricket world, including from India's VVS Laxman and Ravichandran Ashwin. "Sending strength and prayers to my dear friend @damienmartyn and his family. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery. The entire cricket world stands with you, Matto, during this tough time," Laxman posted.
Darren Lehmann wrote, "Lots of love and prayers sending @damienmartyn way. Keep strong and fighting, legend. Love to the family," while Rodney Hogg called the news "shocking" and wished him well.
The elegant right-hander played 67 Tests from 1992 to 2006, amassing 4,406 runs at 46.37 with 13 centuries, pivotal in Australia's dominant era under Steve Waugh. Recalled in 2000 after a six-year absence, he retired mid-2006 Ashes, later transitioning to commentary.
