Micky van de Ven expressed his surprise at the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou from Tottenham. Postecoglou, who joined Spurs in June 2023, led them to a Europa League victory in 2025, ending a 17-year trophy
drought. Despite this success, he was dismissed just 16 days later after the team finished 17th in the Premier League with only 38 points.
Postecoglou's departure marked him as the first Premier League manager since Antonio Conte in 2017-18 to win a major trophy and be sacked by season's end. Thomas Frank took over during the summer, with Tottenham now positioned 11th in the league under his guidance. Van de Ven shared his thoughts on The Overlap podcast, stating, "He was a really good manager. I still really like him. "
Van de Ven admitted he was taken aback by Postecoglou's exit. He said he didn't anticipate such a move, especially after winning silverware for Tottenham. "I never expected this," he mentioned sending messages to his dad and friends after hearing the news.
During their second season under Postecoglou, Spurs faced numerous injuries that hindered their title challenge. They endured 22 league defeats in the 2024-25 season and secured only 11 wins. This led to criticism of Postecoglou's playing style.
The defender appreciated Postecoglou's offensive approach but noted improvements under Thomas Frank. "We are more secure at the back," Van de Ven said, highlighting a preference for not being exposed on counter-attacks.
Initially, teams struggled against Spurs' unique system under Postecoglou. However, as opponents adapted and analysed their tactics, weaknesses emerged. Van de Ven explained that they lacked alternative strategies when plans faltered.
Postecoglou's Brief Return to Management
At one point, Van de Ven and Cristian Romero approached Postecoglou about adopting a more defensive strategy to secure victories. The manager agreed but tasked them with implementing changes on the field.
Postecoglou returned to management with Nottingham Forest in September but was replaced by Sean Dyche in October after failing to secure any wins during his brief tenure at City Ground.
The transition from Postecoglou to Frank has brought mixed results for Tottenham so far this season. As they adapt to new strategies and seek stability, fans remain hopeful for improved performances under Frank's leadership.
