Former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris has welcomed the strong performances of T20 World Cup hopefuls in the ongoing SA20, while also flagging concerns over a growing list of injuries ahead of the global event.
South Africa were forced into two changes to their T20 World Cup squad on Thursday, with Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs replacing Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira after both picked up injuries during the league. David Miller was also absent from Paarl Royals' Eliminator against Joburg Super Kings, while pacer Lungi Ngidi managed only two overs for Pretoria Capitals in the Qualifier against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Adding to the concerns, Capitals batter Dewald Brevis injured his finger during his match-winning 75 on January 21.
"The proof is in the pudding," Morris said during a media interaction facilitated by SA20. "We've had a few guys unfortunately go down with injuries. It's a very tight schedule, but that's the nature of the beast. Players knew what was coming. "
Drawing parallels with other franchise leagues, Morris pointed out that the physical demands are similar across tournaments. "You play day in, day out, travel constantly, play high-intensity games, sleep late and then you're up early again. Add training and recovery into that, and it becomes a real test," he explained.
Morris stressed the importance of careful workload management but admitted it is not always straightforward. "There could be a case for rotating squads, but when a team is winning and pushing for the playoffs, that becomes difficult. Man-management is key, and the coaching staff know what they need to do. "
Now part of the commentary panel for SA20, Morris said players must find ways to cope with both the physical and mental strain of a competitive league. "It's tough on the body and mentally draining, but as a professional, you find a way. We've had a few injuries, but hopefully nothing too serious. "
Positives for South Africa's T20 World Cup Squad in SA20
Despite the setbacks, Morris is encouraged by the form shown by players in the World Cup squad. "It's been a really good run for the guys selected, and even those outside the squad have performed well. There's no better preparation heading into a big tournament. "
He was particularly pleased to see Kagiso Rabada returning strongly after a rib injury. "Coming back from injury, there's always some nervousness, but he's hitting those familiar lengths again. It's great to see KG running in. "
Morris also believes spin could play a decisive role at the T20 World Cup, highlighting Keshav Maharaj and George Linde as key options. "Keshav has been vital for Pretoria Capitals, and George Linde has bowled beautifully even on batting-friendly pitches. Spinners ask questions and break partnerships, even on good wickets. "
