The Badminton World Federation has moved the India Open Super 750 to February for 2027. The change followed complaints from international players about Delhi conditions in 2026.
The event was held from January 13-18 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. It faced criticism over air quality, cold courts, and venue hygiene.
Under the updated plan, the India Open will run from February 2-7 in 2027. The tournament then returns to late January for 2028. It is scheduled from January 25-30 in 2028 in the national capital. The dates appear in the 2027 and 2028 World Tour calendar issued Tuesday.
India Open Super 750 dates change after player criticism
Several leading players raised concerns during the 2026 edition in Delhi. Denmark's Anders Antonsen pulled out and cited unsafe pollution levels. Another Danish
player, Mia Blichfeldt, also spoke about poor training conditions. Mia Blichfeldt referred to bird droppings and dust on warm-up courts at the venue.
The calendar also sets dates for the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow. The event has been downgraded to a Super 100 tournament. It will be played from July 27 to August 1 in 2027. In 2028, it is scheduled from July 25 to 30.
India Open Super 750 included in 35-tournament BWF World Tour
BWF confirmed a 35-event World Tour circuit for both 2027 and 2028. The series runs from January to December each year. It covers levels from Super 1000 down to Super 100. The season-ending World Tour Finals also remain part of the programme.
At the highest level, five Super 1000 tournaments will be staged across Asia and Europe. Each Super 1000 event will run for 11 days over two weekends. Singles will have a 48-player draw with group play and knockouts. Doubles will use a 32-pair knockout format.
BWF said all 1,095 matches from the Super 1000 tournaments will be shown worldwide. "Our players are at the heart of everything we do. As global ambassadors and icons of our sport, they deserve an environment that allows them to perform at their best, recover properly, and connect meaningfully with fans around the world,\" BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said in a release.
\"The enhancements introduced in this calendar, including extended competition windows, are a deliberate step to improve playing conditions for our top athletes. They enable more balanced scheduling and greater recovery time between matches, supporting players in their pursuit of excellence and helping them sustain longer, more successful careers. At the same time, we now have a high-quality, globally balanced circuit of unprecedented scale -- more televised matches into more markets -- creating greater opportunities for players and accelerating badmintons global reach and impact.\"
India Open Super 750 calendar aligns with new scoring and LA28 window
All events in the 2027-2028 calendar will use the new 3x15 scoring system. The system takes effect from January 4, 2027. BWF linked the shift to a long-term plan to modernise match formats. It also aims to improve how the sport is presented worldwide.
The LA28 Olympic Games qualifying window will open on May 3, 2027. It will close on April 30, 2028. BWF said dates and host cities for major team and world events are pending. These include the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2027 and BWF World Championships 2027.
BWF also said the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2028 details will come later. The calendar update leaves those locations and dates unconfirmed for now. With India Open dates adjusted for 2027, the Delhi event remains on the World Tour. Future announcements will fill in the remaining championship schedule.
