Shai Gilgeous-Alexander underlined growing team awareness as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Miami Heat 124-112 at Paycom Center. The reigning NBA MVP and 2025 Finals MVP finished with 29 points, eight
assists and five rebounds in the win.
The defending champions moved to 33-7 with their third straight victory, settling after a 6-6 stretch that followed a 24-1 opening surge. Miami could not match Oklahoma City’s balance, as the Thunder controlled key stretches at both ends.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring night did not start smoothly, with six early misses from the field. The guard then adjusted and closed 10-for-19 overall while hitting two of six shots from beyond the arc. Oklahoma City’s offence flowed better as Gilgeous-Alexander found a rhythm and drew extra defensive attention.
Gilgeous-Alexander explained the mindset behind that turnaround, focusing on reading each possession. "When I'm out there, I'm so in the moment that I don't think about makes and misses," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "It's just how I feel out there, how the game is going, the flow of the game, what kind of stuff we're getting offensively and what we're making them take defensively. That's all that's on my mind. "
Head coach Mark Daigneault highlighted how Gilgeous-Alexander’s playmaking shaped the Thunder display, beyond the box score totals. "He's got the ball the whole game, as many of the best players do. And with that comes a great deal of responsibility for how the rest of the team plays, the rhythm of your team-mates and all of that stuff. His understanding of that over time has grown immensely. I thought he had a great blend tonight, despite the fact that he got it going there with the shot making. I thought he played a really, really strong floor game on that end. "

Oklahoma City now turn attention to the San Antonio Spurs, who visit Paycom Center on Tuesday. San Antonio are 27-12 after a narrow 104-103 defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Western Conference matchup offers another test for the Thunder’s defence and Gilgeous-Alexander’s control of the offence.
Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs against Minnesota with 29 points, starting for the first time since a knee injury. The former No. 1 draft pick had come from the bench in the previous three games while recovering and managing minutes.
Team-mate Harrison Barnes discussed Wembanyama’s difficult season rhythm so far. "I think it's definitely been a challenge for him, just navigating injuries this year," Barnes said of Wembanyama. "You're playing a lot. You go out with a minutes restriction, you go out again on a mid-restriction. It's not easy, coming back from injury on back-to-backback-to-backs. But I thought he did a great job. He has to continue to be aggressive, continue to progress and continue to trust himself. You know that we have a lot of trust in him. "

The upcoming meeting places Gilgeous-Alexander’s organised offence against Wembanyama’s length and scoring return. Oklahoma City arrive with renewed momentum after stabilising their record, while San Antonio seek a response after the one-point loss to Minnesota. Both sides enter with star players in form and key fitness storylines shaping expectations.
